2010 Toyota Prius model II Head Unit Upgrade

    Thanks you for this, So did you ever replace your door speakers? Did the front stage pull back? How does it sound now, using your stock JBL non-nav HU and your stock JBL amp. Only replacing the speakers. Did the Bass response improve or did you loose a little?

    I replaced all of my speakers. I did one set per weekend. Replacing the front door speakers with good quality JBL 6x9's made the most difference by far. Good tweeters and great bass. Not boomy, 14" woofer bass, but a very substantial improvement and quite loud with the Prius internal amp.

    The shallow depth 6" speakers in the rear doors aren't that great. If I had it to do again, I'd install component speakers in the rear doors with a full-excursion 6" or 6 1/2" driver.

    Personally, I'm. It sure if the squawker replacement was worth it. The front-door 6x9's have good tweeters, so the squeakers don't matter that much.

    Hello everyone,
    I recently purchased a used 2010 prius. And I love it. I have always replace my stock radio on all my previous car and the prius was not exemption lol. I bought a 8 inch chinese android car stereo pumpkin ( 5.1 kit kat ) . This will be my 2nd android car stereo. I have also put a 10 inch android stereo on my 2015 mitsubishi evolution .

    For half the price ( maybe even 1/4 of the price ) compare to the major brand double din stereos. It's a great option. It comes with everything. Anything a smart phone can do . An androld car stereo can do. Pics are kindly blurry. I just installed it yesterday. It's a plug and play as long as you get the one built for your car.

    Hey guys! I too own a 2010 prefl model, with the stock audio system.
    I'm considering replacing it with a Kenwood ddx917ws head unit.

    I was wondering if there would be any issues with the steering controls especially the voice command and call buttons.

    Well before I get started with a few notes of my own I'd like to give much thanks to Spiderman for the awesome write up - very helpful. Bear in mind I decided to add these few pointers after the fact. So I apologize for the lack of pictures. I'll just have to add those after the fact as well.

    Anyhow here we go:
    - The Scosche double din HU mount lines up (horizontally and vertically) the HU perfectly for the OEM Toyota aftermarket HU fascia. So there is no need to go through the butt pain of modifying stamped steal brackets. "Use the left and right plastic brackets only. Toss the rest of the kit"
    - However, for my Pioneer AVIC-5200 HU I needed to extend the path (following the same direction) of the existing mounting points by 5 mm in order for the HU to butt against the back of the fascia - leaving no discernable gaps. "Use a rotary tool like a drummer w/ a cutting bit. It looks similar to a drilling bit but its NOT for drilling." Plastic is much easier to cut and work with than stamped steal.
    - Imagine the Scosche brackets as an "L" shape. Now using a rotary tool with a cutting wheel remove the shorter segment of that "L" shape. "These are connecting surfaces for the Scoshe faceplate / fascia. Toss them as well" Your new custom HU brackets well also need as few notches in two places for the OEM spacers to fit correctly. "Again, I'll post the pictures in a bit".
    - Take the OEM Toyota spacers and remove the cylindrical peace sticking off the back of the spacers. "Use the cutting wheel and sanding wheel with the rotary tool"
    - Now your ready to attach the OEM spacers and the Scosche brackets to the HU

    Parts used for HU mount:
    - Scosche double din HU mounting kit
    - OEM Toyota fascia for aftermarket HUs
    - OEM spacers for the aforementioned fascia

    As for using a relay vise a switch for bypassing the HU why not just ground the green brake lead to the black ground lead directly behind the HU? After going through the extra effort of wiring up the additional relay two things dawned on me - all the relay is doing is automatically grounding the Green lead and I had just created a Rube Goldberg machine. It's much easier to simply do as a suggested at the start of this thought

    I imagine you can but I believe you will have to bypass the factory amp in order to properly use the low level inputs of the rear speakers (from the head unit) for the new built-in amp/sub. Also, the draw back to this is you will not have rear speakers - only the fronts and the sub. If there are devices for splitting the channels you maybe able to retain the rears while adding the amp.

    Another thing to keep in mind is how to get the head unit to turn on the amp because the factory head unit likely does not have a remote lead for amps. Nonetheless, you can just find any 12 volt source that turns on with the car or radio and use it as the trigger for the amp.

    If I'm mistaken someone please correct me because it has been some time since if done what Lando is attempting (adding an amp to a factory amplified system).

    What all did you need for the wiring harness? Ive been looking for a couple days but not sure exactly what i need for everything to still work right (steering wheel controls)

    ASWC-1 was used for the steering wheel controls. See my Media.

    Still have to buy the parts through a distributor though.

    Hi guys,

    I'm swapping out my head unit on my 2010 and see that there's a small, square green plug with 1 pin that looks like it's for a GPS antenna. I bought the car used so I'm not sure if it originally had GPS from the factory. Can anyone tell me if this is indeed a GPS antenna wire and if there's an adapter for it to plug into an aftermarket radio?

    The plug looks very similar to the one on the back of my Pioneer head unit, but it's physically off a little bit to fit the factory one.

    About to install the AVH-W4400NEX that I bought from Crutchfield this weekend in my 2010 Prius (non nav, w/ JBL) . I've soldered a good bit before so am not too concerned about making the harness connections outside of the vehicle. There are two wires that Crutchfield said need to go to my OBDII port. Do I physically splice and connect to it under the steering wheel area near the port? Any thoughts? I don't remember seeing anything in the instructions posted here about tapping into the car wiring but maybe I missed it.

    "As for the OBDII connectors, those are the data bus connection between the vehicle and the PAC module. Without those, the module won't generate a parking brake or reverse output for the Pioneer.

    To get signal for these wires in this vehicle, connect the long white/red to pin 6 in the OBDII port and the long white/black to pin 14. Use the purple/white and light green from the interface connector on the PAC unit, not the 'vehicle' connector (there are two sets of each)."

    To circle back, the radio with aftermarket camera is installed. Yes 2 wires went to the OBDII port. It was probably the hardest accessing and tapping in there. Fishing the rear view was easy and the radio swap was pretty straight forward.

    My only issue is the backup triggering is intermittent. If it works after I turn on the car, it keeps working. If it happens to not work during a particular "drive" it doesn't work the whole time. Crutchfield is sending me a new PAC to try. Otherwise I might need to wire to a harness on the driver's side kick panel with a 12v reverse sigbasand tie to radio.

    Only other issue is the trim adapter isn't a perfect fit but certainly acceptable.

    What brand did you buy and where? I see some that look like it on ebay? Any installation comments or hassles? How is the power of it compared to the standard radio?
