This article is worded pretty vaguely - I don't think it clearly says N.A. Primes are not included in the recall. In fact, since our Primes were built in Japan, I would expect the recall to apply to them. Why would the engine wiring harness be different for Primes sold in N.A. vs. Japan?

The issue affects vehicles produced in Japan between June 2015 and May 2018, and includes the plug-in version of the Prius and the C-HR compact crossover SUV sold in Japan, Europe, Australia and other countries
Sounds like Prime is affected too.

Mine is affected. I'm wondering how some are affected but not others. There are 2 different assembly lines, correct? I would have thought both use the same design.

Yours is Prius Four and not PRIME isn't it? Toyota notice specifically calls for PRIUS. Maybe US PRIME were on different assembly line? Just my guess.

They've likely pinned done what has lead to the fault, and determined that NA Primes weren't affected. The recall could expand later though.

Plenty of human labor on the lines. Some gen2 Prii could have had a cover plate on the inverter case installed upside done, and that could lead to cutting wiring.

If affected, won't you get a notice in the mail at some point? And that could be a problem if charging in a garage attached to your house.

Mine checked out OK with vin #.

In addition to being configured with the driver's controls on the right for Japan (where they drive on the left side of the road), I believe that the Japanese version of the Prime is equipped with a CHAdeMO charging port in addition to the J1772 on the US model.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the wiring harness problem. But because the problem was described as having to do with wear and chafing of the harness, I would suspect that no one is in immanent danger of bursting into flames if they have not put on a lot of miles on rough roads. This sounds like a preemptive recall rather than a response to an immediate problem.

Nonetheless, as soon as I hear from Toyota, I'll be bringing my Prime in for whatever modification is deemed necessary.

But the recall does effect Prius in North America, and Primes/PHVs and other hybrids in markets that could have left hand roads.

The article mentioned there was one incidence of a car smoking from the short.

The news reports are a little confusing. The Wall Street Journal just appended an errata to its story from earlier today:

    Corrections & Amplifications
Toyota is recalling about 192,000 Prius vehicles in the U.S. An earlier version of this article
incorrectly stated the U.S. recall included the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid. (Sept. 5)

They might have multiple suppliers of the wiring harnesses. The parts from one supplier might be faulty, no problem from another supplier.
