Here's the bead diameters, near as I can figure. There is more to it too, it's not just the bead diameter, but also is it centred on the machined surface, or at one or the other shoulder. I think too, the implication is that bead is apply to the engine face, not the cover. This must entail engine removal, to be done right. And even with the engine pulled out, all things considered, a nigh impossible task. Basically poor engineering, my 2 cents:

Also, just looking at the above: is it just me, or it that picture mirrored? They do like to keep us on our toes, lol.

insane repair for something that might have been simple? with a gasket. Well, ill spray down the dirt, clean, maybe even check the bolts to confirm they are snug? and watch carefully. Thanks friends!

Leak is usual to be just chain tensioner gasket
    Again 15 minutes
    Well maybe 30
It's a really hump over and reach over engine kinda thing

Ourisman Fairfax Toyota wants $3,353 for the timing cover gasket repair. 170K miles, so extended warranty is a no go. Minimal driveway drips. Do the work or tell them no?

Several members here were quoted around $1700 IIRC.

How bad is it? You can take off the passenger side front wheel, and some of the fasteners on the plastic panel at the inside of the wheel well, bend it back and have a look.

A little engine oil leak isn't going to kill your car. $1700+, I would buy another engine (if that time ever comes)

$3,353 for minimal driveway drips? A quart of oil is under $5?

Dang, wish I'd found this great forum earlier. A word to the wise: get this leak inspected *before* the standard 60,000 powertrain warranty expires, because it includes gaskets. A service tech got me scared and now I'm $2400 poorer and not that much better off for it.

It’s not any different from other jobs. Put a bead , seal, let cure. Actually very easy. I did mine in vehicle. Did a few dry runs putting cover back on then went with it. Got it the first time.
Most times it’s just tensioner gasket.

Tensioner gasket is not form-in-place IIRC, just a regular gasket you replace?

Just run a normal bead and add extra where the cover meets the joints.
