I checked mine with my laser pointer temp gun and got almost exactly the same results this afternoon. My garage floor slab was at approximately 63 degrees, the dryer cable to 10-30r hot-hot-ground wired outlet was the same temp, 5-15 adapter and EVSE plug end were at 64 degrees the entire time, and the brick went from 65 degrees at start to 71 degrees at the conclusion of the charge, which took under 90 minutes on the PIP. Obviously, none of it is warm to touch because it is below body temperature, but it’s nice to see some corroborated data on the temperature delta.

Using those infrared thermometers is always a good idea after a wiring job. In fact, it's good to do that about once a year in the breaker panel and other places anyway. When I was an industrial electrician our insurance company had someone come in once a year to check our whole plant with an infrared camera. Thousands and thousands of connections!! They always found a few that had loosened up.

Someone hooked the modified Prime EVSE to a Tesla, and it reported a charge rate of 12A at 240V. My Chargepoint charger reports a charge rate of 3.6KW, which is 15A @ 240V, and takes almost exactly 2 hours for a full charge. It appears that the Prime EVSE always advertises 12A, whether at 120V or 240V. The charge rate can be reduced to 8A with a setting in the Prime multi-function display. So the modified EVSE will be just a little slower than a "real" 240V charger (like 20%), but the "price is right".

As it should, it has a UK specific plug on it, not NEMA 5-15 like the US.

Someone mentioned before UK having the same part number as US. I just want to point out they are not.

As I recall, and my memory is bad, they opened them up and the part number of the circuit board is the same.

The reason for this is because the moment Toyota needs to stick a different (UK) plug end on the charger, the chargers part number needs to become slightly different.

    Absolutely correct.

Thanks! Your comments make sense to me even though they depend primarily on inference, deduction and logic - not to mention some physics. It would seem that the reports of successfully connecting 240V (properly of course) to the OEM EVSE without SMOKE!!! remains the primary evidence. What would be wonderful would be if someone with true EE qualifications could do a teardown and analysis of the circuit design, and materials. But that would most likely be a destructive teardown and who has the $$$ to sacrifice his/her equipment, eh? Since I usually do a nocturnal 120 slow charge and don't really need the fast recovery of a fast charge think I will wait until more "evidence" is accumulated - or my needs change...

I'm sure that Toyota Inc is not about to authorize this retrofit, or provide support of any kind or form. Ever. Think of the possible liability issues if some dufus screws it up. And I would wager that 99% of the Amurkhan Public doesn't have a clue of about basic electronics/
    - or if they think they do, they really don't. Big Corporations are just Big Targets for lawyers...

It has been over a year now since I got my 240V adapter set up and I have been using it to charge my PIP daily at Level-2 voltages.

I've had absolutely no problem with anything involving the power.

It takes 2-1/2 hours to fully charge from empty if it's not over 100F outside. (It seems to slow down as the outside temps go up.)

$70 for an adapter only, worth it while a level 2 charger is $200?

Why not give it a try? BTW, where are you finding L2 EVSEs (they're not "chargers") for $200?

The Chinese built 16 amp EVSE units from Ebay & Amazon like Duosida typically cost between ~$165 to $200 depending on the plug needed & length of cord given. A 240v Pigtail adapter at $70 for 12" to 18" inches using 12 AWG wire does seem a bit high priced, I build most configurations using thicker 10 AWG or Really Thick 8 AWG wire for much less.

I do have 2 DIY adapters, 4ft and 20ft, using dryer outlet. Cost $16 and $52.

Why was my post about an adapter for the Toyota charger deleted?
