Did they change the EGR valve only, or both the valve and cooler?

It's good that they've cleaned the intake manifold, hopefully thoroughly: it really is part of the EGR circuit.

Also, how many miles on the car?

How cold is it now in your area? In my case, there is no knocking anymore when it's warmer outside. ( warmer than 10c or 50f)

Is engine coolant level in the reservoir stable, not always dropping? If everything else is addressed, could be overheating from chronic EGR neglect, and just age/miles, has tipped the the head gasket to failing.

Still, as long as it's the dealership that's doing all the EGR and intake manifold work, I'm really sceptical. I'd want to open it up and see for myself before dismissing problems in those areas. I don't trust them to do it right, in particular because it's so labour intensive.

I noticed this one morning this past winter! I had no idea what it was and was highly worried my engine was damaged.

Is this still something that the dealership will repair (on a 2011 Prius with 120K mi)?

Easier, and likely way more effective, to read up on the system, DIY.

Did you ever find the problem with your car? I have the same symptoms.

Anyone had changed the intake manifold to the new designed one? With partnummer ending on 54?

I just got this notorious knock on my 2010. It seems after the knock, the coolant level in the reservoir had slightly increased. Not sure what that means.

It's at the dealer now getting the warranty enhancement for the sticking egr valve. But I'm sure that won't solve the problem

I will be in your area next week. We can do the head gasket.

I don't think it's the head gasket yet. I don't drive this car enough for it to go bad. It seems to have a slight knock when it sits for a few days. It just developed that big knock a few days ago.

I've checked the entire egr/intake circuit a few months ago, it's not the issue.

I've also moved house last month, but I'm very close to my old house, now I'm JC91007

Hopefully you have the same or greater space available for your Prius “collection”:).

I left our 2010 for 10 days last year at the Oakland airport and when I returned, it was the loudest, most violent knock I’ve had:eek:.

That was with an oil catch can installed:cool:.

Just keep an eye on the coolant level(y).

Yeah that's the violent knock I got. I have it at longo Toyota right now, hopefully they can figure out the knock. I know my egr circuit is clean, just the valve is the unknown. And there is a warranty enhancement to get that replaced

Did you actuate and clean the valve when you did the intake manifold and cooler cleanse?

I didn't clean the valve as there was nothing visibly wrong with it. It seemed to have functioned properly as well.

But since Toyota says the valve is an issue with the warranty enhancement, it might be the problem. Which makes sense the car only knocks after sitting for a while (valve has a chance to stick)

I know this is a bandaid fix , the k seal stuff is a real small bottle, probably like 8 ounces. I got it at Autozone, I’m just glad I looked in the cylinder and did not start buying all kind of new parts at this Lemmon. The car still drives great when warmed up. The other 3 cylinders looked good.

If you have an impact screwdriver you can remove the 2 machine screws and push on the plunger and get it to go;).

The carbon deposits get everywhere, and the valve seat isn’t exempt .

Check each cylinder with a boroscope in the morning or when it sits for a few days , see if it’s oil or coolant.
