2013 Prius IV ~240,000 miles mint condition

An alarm-like noise just started when I go in reverse, accompanied by a high pitch noise while driving or coasting at low speeds that doesn't at all appear to be brake related...

Noise when accelerating appears to be most noticeable around 30-40mph. No noise when stopping or stopped that I can pick up on.

Nothing dragging or apparently wrong when I inspected the undercarriage. I'm hoping someone smarter than I will be able to identify this probably horrific problem.

It sounds like brake pad sensor pin to me, but if you insist it wasn't brake related noise, then sorry, I don't have another answer for you.:p

I definitely don't insist. Logically, I feel like you have to be right. I've just never had pads that make that kind of noise before. It behaving differently going in reverse also threw me.

I haven't actually taken the brakes apart and inspected them yet (torn tendon in both wrists), so hopefully it really is that simple.

You gave me exactly what I was hoping for; I just needed someone else's opinion before I pathetically ask my wife to help me with my car.

    Thanks!!

    welcome!

how many miles on her? could just be a pebble, but might be the wear sensor. the pads are always lightly touching the disc

i cannot discern an alarm, just the high pitch noise

what's the rumbly/crunchy sound when you stop and start moving in the other direction?

unless your vpns has gone crazy, but that's only up to 15mph

240k miles. Thank you! I honestly doubted brakes could really be the answer because I didn't know that they're always touching, so the fact that it was still making the noise while coasting got me.

I admit it's the only thing that really makes any sense. I initially thought a caliper was getting stuck *shudder *

I think what you hear there is just the pavement because it had some gravel dusted around the area. At least I hope to God that wasn't the car.
