This is the second instance of oiling armpits this week:LOL:.

Sounds like this occurs more than I thought .

Or more than each of us individually will admit to(y).

I figured since the Gen 3 filter doesn't even have an outside, the idea of trying to fill it before installation would be humorous at a glance.

You could just fill the housing with the filter installed and let it soak and absorb the oil,
then pour the remaining oil back in the bottle or in engine.

Yes, I suppose the horizontal filter could add a few extra levels of difficulty. One more item to put on my list of reasons to keep the '07. I wonder if there is a market for an adapter? Something similar to the oil cooler adapters used on trucks, where it allows a filter to be mounted vertically.

It really doesn't matter. ALL engines run a few seconds until oil pressure builds up.
And there is oil left on the bearings and would have to run for a while before damage is done.
I've always filled the spin on filters with oil and let it soak in then fill again until it more or less stops
soaking up the oil. Any oil spilled is just an ounce or so.

Isn't the engine start spin-up sequence done with MG1 sort of under reduced pressure or stress since no combustion is occurring yet? There is the stress of compression, but with the modified Atkinson cycle maybe that is reduced also. If the oil gallery is indeed dry after an oil change, I would think these few seconds of spin very near idle speed, plus the oil film on everything, wouldn't pose a problem for increased wear. I can't explain the noise that is heard though. When I was doing the oil changes on my Gen II I may have heard a brief half-second hiss during the start sequence on the first start after a drain and fill. We need an oil prime button perhaps.

A person could go overboard and install a one quart accumulator system. Install it with an isolation valve, so the valve can be shut while the engine is idling. Change the oil and filter, open the valve to let the accumulator pressurize the oil system and crank it up. These systems work great on cars that operate while under risk of losing oil pump suction/flow.

Only disadvantage would be instant dilution of the new oil.......

MONEY! And they aren't needed for a car for the average user.

Awww, jeez. Let me have my fun, lol. The average user doesn't disconnect COP wires, fuses, fuel pumps, etc so they can crank the engine to "prime" the oil system either. A 3 quart accumulator system is only $200. Certainly that's less expensive than a new engine, which would be needed after about 5000 oil changes with "dry" startups....:D
