Not much to add to this except that when I lost all my keys, I got a mobile locksmith to come out and make some new keys. I think he charged $200, but I had to provide the labor to remove/replace the immobilizer.. My input: you better have skinny hands to get that immobilizer.

I talked to Paul a few minutes ago about getting a module and keys from him. He still has at least one and the price is very! reasonable. So then I called the guy who bought my Prius and he managed to find his lost keys. Maybe now he'll listen about getting at least one spare.

Paul was very helpful over the phone, a true gentleman! Thanks, Paul, I guess I won't need your kit, whew!

I found on my 03 Prius ,date on door jam said made in 02 ,
"turn key from off to ON (not start) 5 times.end with key off/lock but leave in ignition "
would not work for my car but ending with key on at the 5 count did work first time I tried, only change I made.

Hey, on this topic, I have one working key for one of my cars and would like to get a copy plus a remote. Is that basic locksmith kinda thing - my master can program duplicates - I don't have to remove the security box inside the dash or somesuch work?

If you have a working key you can. Here in Tucson, Ace's keyosk can duplicate the key and the transponder. I haven't had any luck trying to program a remote, tho. It's supposed to be possible, tho.

thx. I'll check out some retailers. I thought through all this a few years back when I didn't have any keys to a car - had to take that box out of the dash - but I forgot what I learned.

3prongpaul in Denver can give you insight. As I remember you can have a key made if you can take the immobilizer out--it's located behind the speedo. I called Paul recently, he has/had an immobilizer with keys for about $150, but then the door and trunk key won't match.

My Japanese import NWH11 has the opposite problem; it has a transponder key, but also a plain metal key. Somehow, the immobiliser was disabled back in Japan :O

Well mine would start if the blocks weren’t all at 2.5v!

The "chicken dance" procedure for erasing all registered keys (except the one master key in the ignition), and procedures to register new master and valet key are in the Prius Repair Manual under Body Electrical - Hybrid Vehicle Immobiliser System.
