it is overkill, if none of your car batteries crank the engine

there's a guy on youtube, 'mercedessource' who uses a second battery to 'trick' a dead agm that won't take a charge.
he jumps the agm with another car battery, and puts the charger on the second battery.

When the battery backup costs more than the battery? Yeah, that's a sign. ;) :D

OK, that one is overkill for PRIME and other hybrids. I thought larger capacity may come handy if I need it as an emergency power bank to charge other things like laptop or phones, but I do have a smaller battery power bank for that purpose. How about this one. 1/10 of Amps, but substantially cheaper. Would it be big enough for PRIME and other hybrids?

Interesting...sounds like a similar process to 'jumping' dead tool batteries ( ahem...like the infamous Ryobi One+ batteries ). In fact, I just 'jumped' four of my One+ batteries a couple weeks ago. However, I used my 12V battery charger to do it vs. another battery.

True but having some extra capacity isn't necessarily a bad thing.

That should handle most any vehicle.....except maybe a big 24V diesel.
It should handle a situation where the battery is REALLY weak.
It should still work if you have neglected to recharge the pack for a LONG time.

That's the point of having it. Like a spare tire, life preserver or fire extinguisher, I prefer that they are NEVER used and gladly throw them out when their service life has expired.

@bisco, if you have Pep Boys close by, give them a call. They sell a Bosch battery for under $200 and it has a date code and they install for "free". I had good luck with that on my 12V Prius battery adventure.

The key with an agm is to find out its weak before it fails or you dry out and blow separators ruining the battery.

Normally a weak AGM is just dried out, turn it on it’s side an hour then upside down a half hour then trickle charge using a dumb charger for a few hours to see if the voltage starts stabilizing.

I drilled holes an added a few teaspoons of acid to 2 failing AGMs restoring them.

If the batteries free it’s worth a few experiments but it’s really just for fun.

My Honda Insight I just use a $19.99 lawn mower battery and replace every 2 or 3 years.

I don't think you can support that statement.

Since a "real" AGM is fully sealed, how do you figure the "water" is going to get OUT ??
Hint: it won't unless subjected to EXTREME conditions which will upset the chemistry too.

Trying to "rejuvinate" a completely dead and/or dry battery is a fools errand.
It just isn't worth the trouble.......and some of the "procedures" can be dangerous too.

Bisco, Im surprised you dont know this but AAA has a battery service. the one in my truck died (from a bad alternator, but thats another story) they came out and swapped it out. all i had to pay was the battery it's self, about $130 with tax. (the truck battery is physically larger than the Prius one so maybe the Prius one will be cheaper?
