2008 Prius, I replaced the ABS Actuator myself. The car ran fine for a few days. Now the engine seems to be straining and it slowly moves forward or in reverse. I barely got it home. I need advice on what the issue could be.

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Do you have any lights on the dash, or codes (DTCs) from an OBD2 reader that are worth sharing?

From your description, it could be that the HV battery is failing.

Please find a hybrid compatible OBD2 scanner, then scan for the DTCs and post them here for additional help.

Are there any lights displayed on the dash, or icons on the MFD?

Those codes aren't useful for the most part. We're looking for P-codes like P0A80 or P3021. You will need to find another OBD2 scanner that is hybrid compatible and can report the proper DTC's.

Try a local auto parts chain, many have OBD2 scanners that they loan or will come outside and scan the vehicle for you. If one location doesn't have a hybrid compatible scanner (or after scanning it produces no codes), try another location or a new chain store. You might also try a local mechanic, many will scan for free.

Once you have/see the codes write them down and post them here for additional help.

None of those codes are valid.

A 2G brake system DTC will typically start with the letter C (for chassis) and is followed by four numeric digits (0 - 9).

A powertrain DTC will typically start with the letter P (powertrain) and is followed by four hexadecimal digits (0 - 9, A - F).

You need a mini vci and techstream. Those look like radio codes

    I'm using a In nova 3100 LAT scanner from AutoZone. Codes are; P0A63, P0A78, P0A94, & P0A63 (again!).

Dash lights while engine is running; red triangle w/ exclamation, circle w/exclamation, VSC, check engine, & red car w/exclamation.

Though we are making progress, you may still have unreported codes as you have quite a few dash lights illuminated.

Some of the codes (DTCs) you've posted have multiple subcodes (aka detail codes, INFs or secondary codes) that can help guide you in potentially fixing the problem in a timely fashion. It might prevent some amount of headache and time wasting to locate or purchase a code reader that can read those stored secondary codes (INFs), many choose to use a mini-vci cable with Toyota techstream (hybrid compatible and reports detail codes/INFs).

Here is the workup for DTC P0A63 (notice that it has 6 possible INFs, and how your device reported this DTC twice) : https://share.qclt.com/%E4%B8%B0%E7%94%B0%E6%99%AE%E7%91%9E%E6%96%AF%E5%8E%9F%E5%8E%82%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8Cpdf%E6%A0%BC%E5%BC%8F/Repair%20Manual/04pruisr/05/21bpm/0a60288.pdf

Here is just one of many workups for DTC P0A78 (this particular DTC has 25 associated INFs, but this link only has just a few of them) : https://share.qclt.com/%E4%B8%B0%E7%94%B0%E6%99%AE%E7%91%9E%E6%96%AF%E5%8E%9F%E5%8E%82%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8Cpdf%E6%A0%BC%E5%BC%8F/Repair%20Manual/04pruisr/05/21bpm/0a78287.pdf

Again just one of many workups for DTC P0A94 (this DTC also has 25 associated INFs, if you hadn't already I would think about getting a mini-vci cable) : https://share.qclt.com/%E4%B8%B0%E7%94%B0%E6%99%AE%E7%91%9E%E6%96%AF%E5%8E%9F%E5%8E%82%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8Cpdf%E6%A0%BC%E5%BC%8F/Repair%20Manual/04pruisr/05/21bpm/0a94589.pdf

Thank you. I'll locate that device and hopefully get accurate readings.

Based on the DTC you retrieved, it appears that the inverter has a problem. I assume that you had to remove the inverter to gain access to the brake actuator. Hence I suggest that you carefully review all of the wiring harness connections to the inverter, make sure the high voltage cabling is properly torqued (71 in.-lb), etc.

I think I am about to do the replacement myself as well. Where did you source an brake actuator ?

A few of the local salvage yards have recently arrived GEN 2 Prius and they list their vin numbers in inventory. I'm trying to figure out if one may have already had their brake actuator replaced under the enhanced warranty program.

I did an eBay search for one. I went over the warranties and comments of various sellers until I found one that seemed trustworthy. After you find a match, get a good mechanic if possible, to do the work!

Best of luck with your quest!

Mni VCI Cable report is below. I'll google the codes. But any help would be greatly appreciated.

Those are all network (CAN) lost comms errors (apart from the B1421, which you can ignore – unless you scanned the car outside with bright sunlight beaming down on the solar sensor).

You can find a link to download the "2006 PRIUS Repair Manual - 2006 PRIUS Electrical Wiring Diagram" here: How do I change Coolant Temperature Sensor? | Post #4 as the troubleshooting for all that will be involved.

I would want to be sure that the comms errors were real, (as in, is your Techstream set up working properly?) before jumping in with that bunch of codes. I would be suspecting the MVCI cable as a possible suspect and source of the comms errors.

I purchased the Yueku Mini VCI J2534 TIS Techstream Cable Car OBD2 Diagnostic Cable (1.4.1) thru Amazon. I installed the software with the manufacturers help. I plugged the cable into the prius, clicked Health, and those codes came up. I don't know how to confirm that the cable is not defective.

I am wondering why Mini VCI does not show the P0A63, P0A78, P0A94 codes that you had previously retrieved. Your screenshot list of systems does not show the hybrid vehicle ECU or engine ECU. Maybe that is indicative of the communications problems reported by two ECUs that are appearing on Mini VCI.

I still think you should check the inverter wiring harness connections to make sure they are secure and that the high voltage connections are properly torqued, as I assume you had removed the inverter to access the brake actuator. All of those three codes are related to the inverter.

Here is a screen shot with the power train error codes. I used a scanner with toyota techstream software. Before the scan I chacked all the connections.
