Replace Bad Transmission - Replace Cooler?

    Recently picked up my first Prius. A 2007 with a bad transmission. Excited to get it fixed and back on the road.

    I have the replacement used transmission and will be picking up seals and fluids from Toyota tomorrow. It occurred to me that since this transmission had a service record where there was metal in the fluid at 90K miles and 3 years ago (now at 130K), maybe I should consider some type of flush and possibly replacement of any other parts ( cooling radiator?).

    I don't know what the prius has in terms of other parts besides the transaxle, but I assume that there is an ATF fluid radiator like most other cars and worry that it might have crap in it that would contaminate the transmission that I install. Anyone have any experience with this? Need for replacement or ability to flush the system?

    The dealer replaced the fluid 3 years ago, but not sure if there was any kind of flush done. I haven't gotten the car on jackstands and drained the fluid. Will do that tomorrow.

    1) There is no cooler for the ATF, the inverter coolant loop does run antifreeze through the Transaxle. There is a tiny pump to circulate ATF WS inside the transaxle while the engine is running.

    There is no need to 'flush' a simple drain and fill every 60,000 miles will do.

    Pls in this picture for the coolant part marked in read. Which is the inlet and outlet pipe for the coolant?

    you show a 2012 Gen 3 Prius, so your transaxle looks nothing like that Gen 2.

    Actually the op has a good point. There would be metal debris in the inverter coolant loop. Not a lot as there is a small in.ine filter in the trans but I would be concerned also.

    Easy to fix.

    Disconnect the 12 volt battery in the trunk.

    Dump the inverter fluid.
    Pull the trans.
    Put the 2 trans coolant hoses in 2 separate small buckets because one hose is pumping the other is sucking.
    Fill both buckets up with distilled water till you can determine which one sucks and which dumps.

    Once buckets installed and filled then fill up the reservoir.

    Remove power connector to inverter pump. With ohmeter determine which pin on that pump plug is chassis ground Then you know the other pin is hot.
    Jump in 12 volts to the hot piñon that pump,
    Now your pumping flesh distilled water. Should have fluid dumping into one
    Small bucket and sucking out of The other.
    The water will be sPitting as you pump but that’s ok.
    Keep an eye on the dump bucket till you see clear distilled water.

    Set up that dump side bucket so it just overflows on the ground and keep the reservoir And the suck side bucket full.

    Before installing the new trans pull the dump plug on it and see how much metal is on the magnet end of the plug. Try to get dome of the fluid out in
    Pan and put the pan in the sun and see if you see any non ferrous metal floating in it. Would really suck to reinstall a bad trans,


    After trans installed dump inverter plug again and fill it with TOYOTA SLLC COOLANT AND BLEED INVERTER.
