TPMS is to let you know one or more tires has lower than the set pressure.
I picked up a screw and over tire it leaks, the light came on. It would be nice if it told you which one! :)
But I have a tire gauge. It was the right rear so I have to remove it to plug it. Walfart wouldn't patch it
because it's on the outer tread.
5000 miles later, it's still fine.
I check the pressures every 2 or 3 weeks so I would have caught it. And the car was starting to handle
funny so I knew there was a low tire before the light came on.

FWIW, Mazda has similar sensor, but they self-initialize. If you put snow tires with new (Mazda) sensors on the car, as long as you drive something like 5 minutes above some threshold speed, the car figures it out. And I've priced them, in CDN dollars: $30 bucks apiece for extra sensors.

(Our son as a CX5, we were looking into snow tires.)

It's not uncommon for a flat to happen in about a minute: pick a bolt for example.

VW had a setup that used the ABS wheel speed sensors to determine if one wheel was rotating at a different speed, which would indicate a potential air loss. No TPMS sensors in the wheels, but everytime I rotated the tires or put on the snow tires, it would trigger an alert. Had to go into the glovebox to reset the logic for the new tire/wheel setup.

I would pass on that and take the spousal unit out for a dinner or two with the savings.

Just put a black tape over the tpms light before inspections.

I think there is a hack to disable the light if you jump two pins in the TPMS ECU. At least for Gen2 and Gen3 the hack worked. Not sure for Gen4.

Could also be low battery on one of the tpms sensors or issue with one or more of the sensors.

There was a fella at our meet ups with tpms light on, we plugged techstream to his vehicle, 2 tires and its r pressure weren’t registering w/the tpms system.

What’s weird is that the tire pressure measured with my racing psi reader & jnc jumper back air compressor gauge reads nearly identical. But tech stream has a +/- 2-3lbs difference from the both.

Did you have to get the tires rebalanced with the screw on sensors for each tire? I red reviews saying it increased their tire ambient noise level and it went away after balancing. I’m thinking of low rolling resistance tires being light weight, these sensor could work against the add on weight on the lrr tires.

I've got 3 stick gauges and a cheap digital, One of the sticks more-or-less agrees with with the digital, the other two sticks vary, 2~3 pounds. I wonder if somewhere like Costco tire center (or other) could test your gauge(s) for you?

No. All they would do is compare them to their gage, which may not be accurate. You would need a lab with a calibration standard to check your gage.

I never did rebalance my tires after installing external sensors. I don't think I noticed much difference in noize level before and after. Yeah, those sensors are big and ugly but do a far better job than OEM internal sensors. My external sensors read very close to the value from several manual tire pressure gauges as well as internal sensor value read through OBD. FWIW, I used 4 different brands of manual gauges and they all came close within +/- 1psi. The internal sensors readings were 0.9 to 1.4 psi higher than the external sensor (or manual gauges).

This thread and diagram on comment #1 may help. The thread is about Gen2, but comment #1 diagram is for Gen3.
Gen 2 TPMS disable | PriusChat

I never used the trick on my Gen3. I had snow on the same rim as summer with TPMS. I have separate snow on own rims now for PRIME, but the TPMS light is so far right side of the dash, it does not bother me at all.

    So does everybody else.
The TPMS is NOT part of the tire itself.

Sure. We know by now that anything that you don't agree with is "nonsense".

Using your logic, the oil pressure light and engine temperature lights are "nonsense" too.

IF.....you ever had a slow leak in a tire which culminated in a complete tread failure.......which takes out the fender, wiring and suspension components along with it......and maybe puts you in the hospital or worse, maybe you would have a different perspective.

I clarified the statement a few posts later, in response to a similar question.

Neither of those are parameters I can measure with a gage in my hand. I prefer an actual indicator of the parameter for both of these, not just the idiot light.

My issue with TPMS is not that is an ineffective technology, but that (1) it is mandated to be installed; whether I want it or not, I'm paying for it, (2) there are much less expensive ways to implement it (ABS speed sensors already measure wheel rotation and a few lines of code can make a tire "pressure" warning system).

I have had a number of flat tires in my lifetime, all due to foreign object penetrating the tread of the tire. None of these have resulted in a blowout, and none of the wheels were equipped with TPMS. You can hear and feel a tire going flat, and a cursory visual inspection can quickly identify a significantly (i.e. 10 lbs down) tire. Apparently looking at tires, and measuring the pressure on a regular interval, is becoming a lost skill.

Some times si, sometimes no. It can happen fast.

If it happens very fast, the TPMS doesn't provide any useful information - "Hey, that loud noise you just heard and the swerve was due to a flat tire..."

I've had scenarios, everything fine at the outset, got to destination, get out, see one tire's very flat. No explosion, no swerve.

Ever notice how you're ALWAYS right? I'm gonna say goodby to the eye for a while.
