I hear that high pitch sound. I thought it was on the rear right side but, from what I read, it might be from under the hood? It's that continuous, high pitch, whistling like (kinda like brakes screeching but electrical and quite faint).

So I'd like to know, from the savvy ones: where is it located and has anybody successfully masked it?

PS: not sure I have this thread in the right place, could a mod check that and let me know if there's a change.

Of all the weird little sounds the Prius makes, that inverter/motor whine when I accelerate in EV or decelerate is the coolest. I'd never want to hide that. Sounds like a car from a sci-fi movie. The clatter of the Dodge Ram diesels or the roar of the Harleys leaving the dealership a few hundred yards away on the other hand. I'd love to mask that! ;)

If you're hearing what I think you're hearing, that the sound of extreme efficiency. I hope you'll soon learn to love it like I do.

Probably not gonna happen Jerry :)). It's a very high frequency, high pitch sound like electricity static - nobody likes that, I'm not sure we're on the same page. See the link below.

There is another sound which sounds like sci-fi, which I like a lot btw: each time I accelerate and decelerate the electric engines make the smoothest "vrrrrrr" and the brakes go "pssst". That's classic electro music.

Bisco, not sure I can record that, it's extremely subtle. But THIS right here is on the money - it's quite like that actually, and somewhere distant like a fly 3-4 feet away (1 meter ish) either in the back or idk where.

I've done a test several years ago (I had this mild tinnitus) and the sound tests at the hospital came out really good; I was told I hear very well.

I agree. After hearing what's on that link ... very different. Never heard that before except in hearing tests.

    Yup! That's the sound I enjoy. (y)(y)

If it was only that. I will take panels off and investigate in a few weeks.

It's a 2012 with about 88k miles on it. I noticed it ever since I bought it.

So, went driving, the sound comes when the big battery is charging - either breaking, or when rolling, no traction, every time the arrows indicate the battery is charging.

But I don't think the age matters. I've been reading about people noticing this in their brand new cars. I think this car was opened a bit - not sure what is its history. But when I looked underneath around the battery there was a screw missing, things were a bit loose, and Toyota told me that the battery has been disconnected upon a checkup (but they said the car was in great shape). The rear bumper is a bit too loose. Idk, I can suspect it has been in some accident and it was flipped and made look nice; idk idk idk ...

It works fine. I just want to tune it, to be blissful and that's about it. I kinda got used to it, so it's not bad, but not good. There is this other thread about the high pitch where some say it's from the inverter.

wow, too bad you didn't ask when it was under warranty. i've never heard anything like that, mine has 66,000.

maybe drive another to hear the difference, i wonder if its the inverter or something else.

I edited that post while you were writing :) - yes it seems to be from what other say in that thread mentioned above.

It's happening when the battery is charging as far as I can see.

without a recording there, it's hard to say if it's the same sound. i could not drive mine if it made the sound in the video you posted, but maybe my deafness makes me more sensitive.

It's really fine. Most of the time I forget about it; but when it's on my nerves, it's on. And I also wonder if there isn't something wrong with it.

check @jacktheripper recent posts in the 'high pitched sound normal?' thread. sounds like he has a solution.

Awesome bisco! Thanks! I made this older post about very low static in my speakers each time I turned the car on. I have to stick my ears down close to a speaker to hear it. Either way I wasn't sure this was normal - though people said it is - I suspect it's related.

I will admit, I only skimmed this one but if I understand correctly and I think I saw a couple point out.. but that faint, high pitch sound, and correct me if this isn't the sound you hear but its probably the noise maker which can be unplugged. People just wont be able to hear you coming when you let off the throttle, especially in EV mode. Again, if this is actually the faint high pitch tone you hear.

James I don't think it's a noise maker. I had my rear seats out and I had to install them recently. I don't really notice that noise. It's either something related to the head unit like Jack the Riper says or something around the battery - it sound high pitch, electrical, like an inverter or transformer.

People can't hear me coming usually.
