Careful what you read on the interwebs. I'm pretty sure Gen3 is model year (MY) 2010-2015.
They surely started manufacturing 2010 MY cars in calendar year 2009, and that could be the source of confusion.
    Good luck with the project.

I always wondered that myself. Maybe someone else can explain.
But perhaps maybe it was released in Japan or other parts in 2009 MY?

Our "2010" was built in August 2009, and we purchased it "new" in November 2010. That's a straddle that can cause groin-pull...

OK, 2010 to 2015 to be on the safe side. Searching for engines in Kansas City and outlying area.

14 has new rings, 15 has new pistons, or vice versa

Yeah the vice versa: new pistons in 14, also rings in 15. It'd be nice to see some more 2014 and 2015 votes in my oil consumption poll:

seems odd that they would do the pistons first, then realize 'dang, we should have done the rings too'.

    that's what always confuses me.

Both the pistons and rings are problematic?

Too, I think the jury's out on these new-and-improved pistons and rings. To flog the dead horse some more: I would think replacing knackered pistons/rings with original part numbers would also work wonders.

Looks like no fresh votes in my poll (3rd gen oil consumption by model year, linked above). :(

i just figure if your looking for a problem, and decide the pistons are it, you might look closely at the rings at the same time, not a year later

I've got the shop vac ready. It's been sitting outside for a while.

We had to jump it after hauling it to the place and my brother managed to drive it into the garage. We're going to have to swap the starter battery just to get the back hatch open and all of the windows down.

It's going to be a couple of days - first we have Thanksgiving, then my brother and me are going on a road trip.

I have set up pretty good lighting, and intend to document the whole process. I have multiple cameras, and can have a GoPro mounted over the engine compartment, and have a camera stand so I can photograph the parts as they come off. I've been editing video and doing graphics since the mid-80s.

If this all works out well, hopefully I'll have something to share with everyone.

If not, I'll have a hilarious thing for you all to laugh at.
