Hasn't one of our members done this several times? Purposely ran his gen 2 out of fuel like a dozen times, while carrying a gas can just to measure this? I just don't recall his ID right now.

You drive around 205 in Clackamas that's a good ride for testing your fuel efficiency. I have a '07 and were pretty much on the same mileage. I can easily tell you your car can hit 430-440 miles a full tank which is very good for that year. Just a thought try not to push emptying your fuel tank, there are foreign buildups inside every cars tank and you might wanna not disturb that to find its way to your injection system. Running an electric pump to seep out our gas can be tricky. With a little spark can lead to something that might get out of control.
Anyways nice to know that your happy with your purchase, ride it and enjoy it. PS. 205 exit Estacada from Newberg is my route every single day. I'm glad I bought the Prius its the perfect car for this commute.

I drive from Estacada to south Portland 4 days a week 28 miles each way (passing over 205) .now getting 52mpg into town (starting at 900ft elevation ) 51 on return ,already up from 47 and 48 respectively after rebuilding hybrid battery 6 months ago at purchase (doubled mileage for previous commuter), love this little car perfect for this commute just hate the fuel tank and guessometer (want to be able to use a consistant 10gal year round).
Amazing that this car gets the same gas mileage as my 1000cc motorcycle

    A. Exactly the right amount to get to the next available gas station before your CFO decides you can't be trusted not to get stranded.

    Q. How do I know this?

    Good judgement comes from experience.
    Experience comes from bad judgement.

It is not ydpplqbd's fault he owns the one car in the last 30 years you can never know how much range you have left. OTOH, it really did help emissions.

IMHO, exploring features of a new-to-me Prius are not a issue to which fault can be ascribed.

If CFO is an acronym for base words that mean "significant other", what are the base words that give rise to the acronym "CFO"?

some men refer to their spouse using this acronym, because in their relationship, she controls the pursestrings. or, it's just a term of affection

I had never encountered it, in fact, before hanging on PriusChat, so maybe it counts as local flavor.

I just don't see the benefit of this experiment.
Literally pumping the gasoline OUT of your tank at any given point, only show's you how much gas you had in your tank at that point. Since the Gen 2 Prius has the fabled gas bladder, that point you've chosen may not be static, so it's no guarantee that you have that same amount at that marker in the future.
Even if assuming that's going to be a pretty stable point?
    You're driving a Hybrid.
So how far you might be able to drive on that remaining amount of fuel, is going to vary based on hybrid factors. That is, how charged or uncharged your battery may be, the outside temperature, driving conditions, and the immediate speed and torque demands. That is, pump a gallon out....it may represent you could go 40 miles, 50 miles, 60 miles more, but all that will depend on conditions and unpredictable factors. So all you're really doing...is pumping out gas and looking at it.
    I'd abandon the whole folly.

Long drive, side roads, odd hours, the best advice is just try to fuel up safely and not at a point that put's you anywhere near being empty.
If you think the journey is not going to allow this safety cushion? Even though I don't like doing it, but carrying extra fuel in safe, approved containers might be your best bet.

But with the fantastic gas mileage of a working Prius? Just fill up when you can, and as often as you can, in preparation for those night/early morning drives, and side road gambits.
I have no idea exactly where you plan to drive, but in the USA, for the most part, you should be able to plan your fill ups, to cover those stretches where you might be more isolated.

**Caveat- of course that is exactly the thinking that get's the victim stranded in most horror films.

But my point is, unless you're tied psychologically to always running your tank down as low as possible, just fill up BEFORE you reach those isolated points, or before nightfall.
Or if you are really unsure carry extra fuel.
But waiting until you've got a blinking single pip, and then removing all the gas from the tank to determine remaining volume...seems like a lot of work for dubious value to me.
Basically on a drive as you describe, you want to avoid ever reaching 1 blinking pip...whether you know how much gasoline that leaves you with or not.
Pre-Planning your trip, to know where and when you'll be in areas that should provide refueling options seems a better use of time and energy.

Like a lot of other things that end up being "debated" in forums like this.......
"exploring" things like this helps satisfy OCD.
If he wasn't obsessed with his gas gauge, it would be something else.

Sam, it appears that you have diagnosed me with OCD (AKA "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder") without ever meeting me (and without being a doctor AFAIK).

    Wow!!!

I've hung around Prius Chat and other automotive forums enough to know, people will do...basically whatever they want to do. And? If it's safe, and they want to do it?
    More power to them.
I just think this particular experiment has limited value. Could even provide misleading results, and isn't the best way to go about trying to NOT run out of gas.
But....there's a lightening storm, flip the switch Igor! We've got some experimentin' to do!
If the OP does it...I'd be interested in his results.

Having lived in Jersey in my younger years, I'm trying to figure out ANY place in the state and most of the northeast) that you could drive more than 10 minutes without having a gas station available.

As a generalization...and probably totally unfair stereotype....
I would say within Prius Chat being any degree of OCD is almost perceived as a badge of honor.
Prius have a tendency to be owned by people who LIKE paying extra attention to things most people ignore, so I think a LOT of us drift into the OCD realm.

If we were generally an unmotivated or dispassionate group, we'd be driving something else.
    Like a Honda Fit.
