I'm too cheap to have the dealer do a 6-month check on my new 2020 Prius Prime, so I'm doing it myself. Can anyone offer guidance on how to check the inverter coolant?

I notice that the service manual refers to engine/inverter coolant, leaving me to wonder if the Prime uses one coolant for both engine and inverter. That, I believe, is not the case in most previous year Prii.

Any recommendations on good procedures to follow for Service 1 will be appreciated!

    welcome!
no 2 year free service anymore?

same coolant, different circuits. both have reservoirs with min/max levels. i have never gone below min in any of my 3 pri up to 8 years and 70,000 miles

rotate tires, check engine oil level, all fluids, inspect brakes, tighten chassis bolts. it's all in your maintenance schedule

There's the engine and inverter coolant reservoirs:

At the first service they're VERY likely both at the full lines (embossed on the sides). Over time they may drop, maybe more so with a new vehicle?

I found with our 2010 the levels slowly dropped, to where both were at the low marks by maybe 4 years. I purchased a 4 liter bottle of Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (55% pre-mix up here :)) from a local dealership, topped both reservoirs back up, using a cup or two of coolant, and they haven't budged since.

When it comes time to replace the coolant (this fall for me), I'll buy one more 4 liter container, probably be ok for changing both. I'll start with the engine coolant, see how it goes.

Toyota Canada recommends to change both at 10 years or 160K kms, whichever comes first. Toyota USA delays the inverter coolant change to 15 years or 150K miles (240K kms).

In the US, the first 2 years/25kmile of services are covered free by Toyota Care. Check the inverter coolant, I believe is just a visual check on the coolant reservoir level. I can't see needing any service this early.

Sorry, nothing is "free". You still have to make an appointment, drive the car there, wait for it, listen to them try to upsell you on unneeded "services" and drive it home. Total waste of a day.

It depends on how you plan your day. I live in a rural countryside where the nearest Toyota dealer is hours away. When I make the appointment for the service, I plan the visit to the city for shopping and other things. They provide a free shuttle or a rental car for the duration of the service. It works well for me. It happens about twice a year. Gas cost is $5 top. Even if I don't go anywhere besides the dealer, it's a change of scenery I enjoy, and while waiting, I can get my work done on free WiFi or read my favorite book in a comfortable lounge with free coffee and icecream. Oh, also I get a free car wash too. For the last 5 years, I visited my Toyota dealer maybe a dozen times for my previous Gen3 and current Prime services, but besides my time and ~$5 gas cost/trip, it has not cost me anything. This includes routine maintenance, oil and lube, transaxle fluid change, insurance work of front glass replacement and recalibration of the sensor, warranty work on fixing rattle in the dash, and another warranty work on rust on hatch handle. :coffee:

BTW, now out of free Toyota Care, I do oil and filter, fluid check and tire rotation DIY. Yeah, not worth the trip and pay $100 or more for that service at the dealer.

I once had a car salesman tell me, emphatically: "there is no free lunch".

With the car being a 2020 If they did find anything wrong it would be under warranty. I would wear them out in the first year if anything made a squeak or something out of the ordinary... Just the other day my display reset and you can bet I am heading to the dealer to have them find it...

I just booked my appointment with the dealer. I have not had them try to upset any services in the past. If they ever tried I would just say no thank you. As others have pointed out, the service is free.

Here's a tip: a bottle of Toyota coolant is not cheap. If you change it and end up using all the new coolant you bought, save some of the old stuff in case you need to top up a little. A bit of old coolant in the system is probably better than buying an entire bottle just to add a small amount.
