This mod was done by me and it was one of the easiest mods on the Gen2. Never seen anyone in this forum doing it but it might be already old news. When i searched in here a lot of comments for aftermarket stuff, rewiring, a lot of money and nothing as simple as this. If your car has no home link at all it will requre extra rewiring but only 3 wires. My car was factory equipped with the Homelink.
I was looking at some mirrors at a parts yard and figured out the mirrors on so many cars are similar or identical and made by the same manufacturer - Gentex.
This mirror came from 2008 Hyundai Sonata (not 100% sure) and I like it because it has green light digits and they totally match the green dashboard and green display of the Gen2.
It took about 1 minute to take the mirror off and another 1 minute to put the new one off. I mean it doesn't get any easier than that. Only tool needed was T20 Torx. It also could be
done with very small hex but it may strip the screw.
These mirrors are all over the internet. You can buy new, old, used, any kind of mirror. They cost anywhere from $5 to $50 or more in some cases. This mirror cost $5+tax at my parts yard

Installation was done the following way:
Hardest part is to find this mirror.

1.Locate the T20 Torx screw behind the mirror. Take it out and slide the mirror up and remove the small plastic cover. Then un clip the plug connector
    [IMG]

    2. The connector on a factory equipped with Homelink and automatic dimming mirror should look like this. 3 wires only on the bottom row
    [IMG]

3.This is the way my new and old mirror compare. Shape and shade is 1:1. Only one button is different - the compass. OEM mirror has 1 button for on and one for off. New one has 1 button that does both those
    [IMG]

    4. Make sure your new mirror has 10 pins connector. Other ones can require rewiring
    [IMG]

    5. This is the part numbers of the new mirror
    [IMG]

    6. Install the new mirror and insert the connector. Screw back the T20 Torx.

    7. Your new mirror should look like this before you start the car. After you start it the compass may need re calibration. In my case it did not for some reason. Some manuals say that you may have to do a 360 O-turn. After that it should re calibrate. And after you can reprogram the Homelink for a garage door.

    8. After the car is on this is how it looks

It definately works just as good. Now i can be wrong but new mirror seemed to me to be darker when dimmed. I used my phone flashlight to dim it and its very dark. On normal situation where car headlight behind you make it dimmed then its the same to me.

Chances are there is one in 10 mile radius from you if you live in Chicago. There are quite a few junk yards and so many cars have that mirror. If you don't know where to find them write me a message :)

I am on the north side of Chicago. Haven't been to Victory in many years. Any favorites of yours?

Nice mod! Does the compass automatically align the heading or is there a procedure you have to perform?

This walks through everything. There are zones you will need to set for it to be accurate.

Yes, great video. I have done the garage door pair and i was aware of the compass but my mirror was already at the same city i guess forever and its exact. Normally Chicago is the only big city that most streets are North - South, east - west
I hope this write up goes in the golden reserve in the "list of prius modes"

I just found and ordered one from Chicago. :) Great mod. I've always been bugged that even with the GPS on, I can't get it to show a compass like I have in every other vehicle I drive. (Newer vehicles)

I'm fairly sure you can show a compass on the navigation, as well as have the map oriented so North always at the top.

I can have it always facing north, but I haven't been able to find a compass. It's all good. I gave up even using the Toyota GPS in favor of Waze years ago. I travel the country, and having to change regions in order to set up a trip was driving me buggy, it also seemed to not have a lot of smaller roads on it.

My wife's is a much newer model, and it's just as irritating, but has a weather option that we like.

The mirror compass would outperform any phone navigation system in one specific task. If your drive deliveries 100+ miles everyday in the city of Chicago like in my case when you turn your navigation on the phone sometimes does not know which way you are oriented. Or if you're in the major intersection on a gas station the phone will make you go the other way half of the time. And since the citi has all 90° streets the mirror compass will never fail. If I had the factory navigation it would not fail me as well but I do not have Factory navigation and the only reason I will put one is just to show me the orientation of the car at any given moment while I use the phone for something else or just for the sake of it

Where did you find it, what did you get, and how much did you pay?

I googled "2008 Hyundai Sonata rearview Mirror" and then sorted through all the door mirrors and grabbed one off of Ebay.

I probably paid a bit much, but I looked yesterday and didn't see one for under 50 bucks.

I bought the same one you did, OP, and it's been working great. Thanks again for the mod!

I just got home yesterday and picked up all the packages. I'll be back at the car next week and put it on. (I'm in Missouri, the car is parked in Michigan currently.)

So far I see no reason why it wouldn't work. It is the same plug, and looks identical to my mirror except for one extra button.
