    Hello all,

My check engine light came on (2010 Prius II), and the code indicated water pump failure. I replaced the pump myself, and then as I was plugging it back in, I noticed a wire on the connector was cut or corroded away (see below). Could well have been the problem all along.

I've been struggling for several weeks on how to fix this. I can't find the right part, and I'm not sure how I would fix it even if I did. I found this thread where someone had to replace the whole connector, but mine is just the wire broken.

Any advice on how to approach this problem would be greatly appreciated. As you can see in the photo, only one wire appears to be damaged (brown one on the bottom left).

Here is a post that shows how you would navigate in the online wiring diagram (more info) to find the connector you are looking for. (This example is for a different part than your water pump, of course.)

If you look at the example where the drawing of the connector is shown. up to the left of it is a link "[᠎+] Wire Harness Repair". When you click that link, it expands and shows you the individual terminals inside the connector, and the part numbers for them, and the splicing materials needed, and how the terminal is unlocked and removed from the connector so you can put the replacement one in.

Here is another post that kind of continues the story, and shows what you see once you expand the "[᠎+] Wire Harness Repair" section.

If I'm following this correctly, I need to buy a subscription to TIS in order to view the wiring diagram?

THAT is going to be a pain in the …...

It's amazing how expensive a single plug can be when purchased from a dealer. I've seen some priced at $30 with a 2 week wait. Hopefully you get lucky.

May be worth searching for a salvage yard with a Gen 3 or craigslist for someone parting out a Gen 3 and get the plug. They're probably not in very high demand. Snip the wires as far back as possible where it joins the main harness so you have plenty of new wire to work with. On the original one, remove the outer black sleeve from the wires. If the wires don't match colors, and if each wire color/markings are not unique, mark each wire so you know exactly which terminal they're supposed to go to. Take pictures. Cut your wires as close to the plug as possible and then splice the new one onto your wire harness. Use the proper sized butt splices and a good quality crimper. You may even want to slip some heat shrink over each one (before crimping, lol) so you can make it seal well.

The other option would be to figure out how to remove that one pin from the plug (sometimes easier said than done considering how much hand room you may have) and then just find any connector with the same type pins and take one pin from it. If you were able to get a used connector, it would give you something to learn on to reduce the chance of damaging the connector on your car. Same type job of splicing, but you'd only have to do it to one wire.

If only one wire broke, only one repair terminal is needed.

That plug is on a branch of the wire harness that comes down from the valve cover, clips to the intake manifold in a couple places, and has plugs for the water pump, air conditioner, knock sensor, and throttle body. Unplug those four plugs and flip the branch up where it's easy to work on, not difficult access.

The splice materials Toyota sells are parallel splices rather than butt splices. They do want the splice to be sealed up when it is outside of the cabin.

An experienced Toyota parts person can get you all of the items needed for this repair. Toyota lists all of the connector part numbers in the EWD file and the associated items should be easily obtainable.

Attached is all of the information needed: connector part #, repair wires, sleeves, etc. You should be able to bring this info to your parts dept to get what you need.

    Hope it helps
