Or, if you've prepared with a way to read your trouble codes and look them up, you realize how helpless you would have been if you hadn't.

I have techstream..... but most people don't purchase a prius so they can lean to use techstream.
Even this is beyond the scope of many people.
Prius a ok car until hybrid things start going wrong......

Cars are ok until car things start going wrong. If there's a person who finds "read some trouble codes from this port; read in this book some to find what they mean" to be an overwhelming reading assignment, that person is going to have iffy outcomes taking care of pretty much any present-day car.

I just had two alignments done.

The first one by my favorite alignment place. Their fancy machine scans the VIN barcode and even prints it out. When I got home and shift to reverse I noticed that the park assist feature activates and is actively looking for a spot it can "self park" in. ($70).

Because I was irritated with the caster being off I ended up taking it to a dealer. They aligned it. ($129 - $15 coupon but add tax so IIRC around $129). Their printout was much less detailed. And when I got home the park assist is gone!

After an alignment adjustment instructions say to:

Set steering wheel/front wheels straight ahead
Perform yaw rate and acceleration sensor calibration.

I wonder if just doing that would have possibly prevented the errors the OP had.

See, that's what's so much fun about playing the "hey, I've got warning lights, you've got warning lights, so the same thing must be wrong with both our cars!" game.

In this case, the OP has a code for power converter performance that may be covered by a recall.

But that does set warning lights, and an uncalibrated yaw sensor sets warning lights, so hey.

Maybe there is really only one car problem, and everybody has it.

I know several people that are pretty good wrenches but they balk at the traction
battery or the master cylinder and pump replacement. They seen me do mine.
And they change engins and tranis.
    Hybrid is more complicated ......
I diagnosed my neices kia soul with her code reader. Bad fuel injector.

There's scarcely anything different between a Prius master cylinder and pump and those in any other modern car with hydraulic ABS and stability control, as can be seen in this general automotive technology book section.

You'll have your pump, your accumulator for pressurized fluid, your actuator with independent valve sets for the four wheels, your pressure sensors, your brake/skid ECU controlling it all. The Prius has regen (oo woo, scary), but that changes nearly nothing about the hardware of the brakes from the comparable system in a modern conventional car. The software running on the brake ECU has an extra job of negotiating with the power management ECU over how hard to apply the brakes, but it applies them using the same old hardware to do it. If you have to wrench on it, you wrench on it the same way.

The battery's a big ol' box with + and − terminals on one end and some relays and sensors inside and a cooling fan.

Have these pretty good wrenches had anything to say about, oh, a repair manual chapter on some modern conventional car's automatic transmission?

Ya but I've never had a traction battery or master cylinder ever go out on any other vehicle I ever had and I'm 64.
I don't worship the prius. No where as good as my camry....

Update: Well, it looks like my problem is caused by the J0V Recall. Will report back after confirmation. Currently Toyota paid for towing and rental car during repair.

And I have the Prius back. Indeed it was the J0V recall. The symptoms were that the Prius went into "limp mode" and only ran on the gas engine while I was heading back home after the problem manifested. The following lights were illuminated and that was followed by a dead 12V battery, sending me on a wild goose chase as to the cause of my problems:

The following warning lights all came on immediately after turning on the adaptive cruise control (see attached photo)l:

    Slip Indicator light
    Dynamic radar cruise control
    Brake System Warning Light
    Malfunction Indicator Lamp (Engine Check)
    Hybrid System Warning Light
    Pre-Collision System Warning Light
    E3 displayed in the dash

I guess the Hybrid battery charges the 12V and when the system stopped functioning, so did the 12V charging.

I pressed for Toyota to pay for the towing, and for a replacement rental car. After some hagglin, I was successful. Attached is a photo of the work they did.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Thanks for sharing that. Toyota does an excellent job of taking care of recall issues IMHO.

Hope you enjoy your Prius for many more years to come.

So what was it happened, in laymen's language? The "IPM" was replaced. This is a small computer inside the inverter case?

You can look back at post #36 for an overview of what bits in the inverter assembly get replaced, depending on the details of the failure in any specific case. As the work order shows the detail codes were 553/557, only the IPM was replaced. It's a box of honkin' transistors with some control circuitry.
