Get it diagnosed to be sure. Gasketmasters operates in your area replacing head gaskets for less than that. But an engine swap may reduce oil burning, a likely root cause on the 2010-2014s. $2600 is cheap for anywhere in the US, almost questionable in the Bay Area.

I might consider getting advice here:

My guess is the $2600 option would involve a high mileage "salvage" engine, perhaps on the verge of similar problems as you currently have.

That is why my go to advice for this epidemic on high mile Prius engines is to have a low mile (less than 100k?) engine rebuilt even if it is $2000 more than a mechanic's head gasket quote. Eliminate oil burning and oil leaks as well. At least for the next three or four years. In Jag29's case, 118k miles is still a candidate for a head gasket - assuming it was not an oil burner, the head and egr are cleaned and a provision for extended pcv hosing is added. The decision is not easy for the average owner. That is why a good hybrid mechanic's testing and advice is warranted.

I just find this stuff interesting from an engineering standpoint.

My car hasn't reached 25k miles in nearly nine years of ownership. I purchased if with cash savings in Feb. 2012. Immediately, I started saving for the next. So, I already have enough for the replacement, if needed.

If it was me, I would buy a completely rebuilt engine for under $2k and install it myself, and be done with it.

If your pockets are a little deeper, and you don't like surprises, a new short block and machine shop rebuilt head is not that much more. It is more complexity than just dropping in a salvage engine, granted.

It'd be interesting to know if any-and-all new short blocks come with the revised pistons/rings. Almost moot though: either way you should be good for at least another 100K miles.

There are complete rebuilt engines with heads available on eBay for about $1800 delivered.

That seems too good to be true? Not sure.

Thanks for all of your reply. Update I just change the ignition coil yesterday. Start the car this cold morning, the noise and shake vanish. So i bought a coolant to put in on level. I’m gonna observe it for another couple of days or week. If the check engine come back again, then probably I have to decide. I appreciate all of your advice and comments
