Fixing Friend's 2014 Prius c Need Knowledge

    Possibly time to check fuses? Either that or start following wire harnesses or checking connectors for open contacts...

    Any chance of rodent damage?

    Checked all fuses over and over. Car still runs but the abs etc lights stay on.
    My original thought was rodent damage but have not found any. A sniffer test was done too. Still think that is the case. Following the harness is not going to be easy.

    Want to take the cowl off the wipers to get a better look. Is that difficult? Maybe water got in somewhere. The c has a break in the cowl where the brake fluid reservoir is.

    Have you run the DLC3 Cable Check in Techstream? Did it come back looking something like this?

    Yes, first step confirm your Techstream setup is functional with another Prius?

    Also, it's good to keep an OBD2 bluetooth reader in your glove box so you can use Dr. Prius App to clear codes to try to see if your car will let you drive it home if it goes into limp mode. This would also help to confirm if your cars ECU's are functioning. Here's buyer's guide: priusapp.com/obd.html

    Yes the car still operates. Not sure how well but seems okay. New battery is in. Tested at 12.7 up front. I need to check my techstream with the other prius. I will try this other test too.

    Have you determined what part needs replacement yet?

    In the last episode I remember, the intrepid crew was still working to establish communication with any ECUs.

    Yes we are still trying. My copy of techstream has not been helpful. Pushing it cause friend has run out of time. Need some advice.

    Multimeter in one hand and repair manual and wiring diagram in the other, find out why none of the ECUs can be hailed, and fix that. If friend has run out of time, do quickly.

    Such great advice here. i am trying. Unfortunately the are I need to access requires pulling everything apart. So at the very least I would like to have the brake part (accumulator/ecu/actuator?) ready.

    Any body with more advice, Thank You Again, thank you ChapmanF and others

    Well, if you want to have the accumulator/pump on hand, it's this, and if you want to have the ecu/actuator on hand, it's one of these four (1 2 3 4—you'll have to study the "what this fits" listings carefully and match up to your c's exact trim and build date, or call a dealer and give them the VIN and ask which is the right number. At least all four options are the same price, so that's not up in the air).

    But the thing is, both of those are pretty expensive parts, and if you haven't diagnosed the issue you're having yet, and then you get around to doing that and it turns out to be something else entirely, a damaged wire perhaps, that's $2400 tied up in parts you never needed.

    Auto parts vendors typically have a policy that electrical parts aren't returnable.

    Have you even pulled blink codes from the brake ECU yet, just as a possible way to make progress around your Techstream difficulties?

    So the car has been fixed. Finally had all the things come together.
    The GOOD NEWS:
    On the Prius C the electronics do not have to be moved. The big battery does not have to be disconnected. The small 12 volt regular is.
    Quite a bit of fiddling to get the part out from under the dash and all but the job is simpler than feared.
    The only part that takes trouble is the bleeding. Still need to perfect that.
    Also, check brake switch. Seems new piece does not reach into the cabin as far. ( it attaches to the brake pedal). This causes the brake to be in a more depressed mode, slightly lower. The brake switch on this car is pressed when the brake pedal is fully up, unpressed. Therefore the switch bracket and such has to be adjusted if this happens. You will notice the lights on. And the bleeding will not work for some parts. The part, in addition to the brake pedal, actually attaches to the inside of the firewall too. There is a gasket on the engine side of the firewall.

    Outside of the bleeding part, the job goes quicker than feared.

    I would not hesitate to do this again.

    Some issues I will need advice for:
    Need to perfect the bleed method.
    Wonder if replacing the part beneath is a good idea.

    I just wanted to say "replace the battery because it can test good" is bad advice. 1. The prius doesn't put a load on the battery like regular cars do. It just is a source of power for the ECUs. 2. Even if it was a regular car, you don't just buy a new battery without load testing your old battery first.

    Your friend should call toyota corporate and complain about that dealership. Took the car in for dash lights and they're not fixing it instead changing out wipers and headlights without informing the customer for consent on that maintenance? contact the state attorney general also.

    I have an instruction sheet for the Prius c brake booster removal etc. Is there a way to get it here electronically? I only have a hard copy. The Prius C is easier cause there are fewer parts to remove. The bleeding needs to be perfected...

    Scan it to a PDF or JPG.
    If you don't have a scanner, Staples, etc. should be able to do it for you.
