Thanks very much for all that, Ed! Given all of this, I've decided to walk away from this nice looking, nice-driving Prius. Too many unknowns here, and this car lot gives me the feeling that they're trying to fool me. Gonna settle for my 2nd choice, a 2013 Mazda 3.

Curious why you would be disassembling your engine? Not many people just go pulling valve covers/etc off a good running/good condition engine. What did you have going on?

Replaced plugs found Found oil in spark plug well #3 so replaced valve cover gasket. I wouldn’t call that
    Disassembling the engine.

Life of Redline engine oil 10-30 with zddp package. It’s a 40 weight oil at op temperature.it stopped my minor oil eating issue. $10 a quart but u get what u pay for. It’s the only oil I have used on a g2 that stops the loud Solid lifter Valve clatter on this motor.

Everyone touts oil additives screw that just use a really good oil.

    That's all I'm really saying.
Yes, I could be behaving entirely unfairly paranoid, in both incidences.

But with used car purchases? I've found that approach to be much more a saving grace, then a problem.

When I'm looking at...well any vehicle New or Used, I'd rather be present and see it's behavior from a cold start.
When magically...the vehicle appears already warmed up and running?
Well I'm not asking for a convenience or nicety here. Just let it sit, let it actually be cold, and let me see how it behaves starting up from that point.

As the 3rd owner of my G2, I haven't noticed oil burning, but I see just a tiny amount at the bottom of the throttle body after 1 year. I was wondering where you purchase your 40 weight oil you use for yours. Thanks.

Oil in the bottom of the throttle body is very normal. Disregard that.

I buy my Redline oil at Jeggs.I use 10-30 which at operating temp is a 40 weight oil. keep the oil at the full line always.

I also use Redline trans fluid D6 and Redline Water Wetter in the engine and Inverter coolant.
There's some trans uoa's in the G2 trans stickys.

I would never buy a Mazda every again after owning 3 of them and they we're problematic. My last 2008 Mazda CX7 had a bad timing chain problem which happens around 100k for the engine in my model. Which was a 2.3L ford engine. If not found and replaced in time your engine blows up. The 2nd Gen Prius consider the most reliable car ever built in the last 20 years. After owning my Prius I did a lot research and did a lot maintenance because it had 150k and only oil change service records since new. She burns a little oil 1/4 qt of oil every 1000-1300 Miles. I keep an eye on it. I read these cars generally get 300k with very little maintenance. So far out of the 30 cars I've own so far this used Prius is the best so far as for reliably and comfort.
Try to find another Gen 2 Prius with leather if possible. Or just one with good maintenance record. I promise you want be disappointed. The gas I've saved for the last year has put a smile every time I go to the gas station to fill up.

He's not buying a Miata but Mazda 3 which has the 2.3l ford engine that was in my CX-7. That engine is problematic.
Miata is probably the best car Mazda has made in the last 15 years. RX7 and RX8 oil burners. All the other models are crap.
