Here is a good video showing results of Techron on cylinder head cleaning. Looked like it did some minor cleaning but nothing impressive.

His channel actually tests a variety of cleaners. Looks like Seafoam and Royal Purple yield better results than others.

This doesnt speak to cleaning other parts of the fuel system like the injectors:

I'm currently (slowly) running 44k as preventative since my mileage is better than expected already.

As far as what's in it...I stuck my finger in and it sure didn't feel like Ethel.

Considering that Techron makes NO claims that it will do that, those results are not surprising at all.

Went to Canadian Tire today. The "Formula One" fuel injector cleaner wasnt there, but they had a simular product from the same brand called "Fuel Saver". The "Fuel Saver" claims to clean injectors and intake valves. I figured it probably cant hurt (fingers crossed) so I bought it. It sais one 0.475 litre bottle treats 500 litres of gasoline so obviously you dont need much.

Of course they had all the other brands of fuel injector cleaners and other cleaners. I figure the only way to be sure you bought the right brand is to rotate through a bottle of each different one over the years :D

FWIW I didn’t notice anything, using the Formula 1. Wasn’t expecting to, and were low kms, injectors pretty clean to begin with.

I find it rather odd that Techron isn't available in Canada.
    Look for Berrymans B12 Chemtool.
It is a good "heavy duty" fuel system cleaner.

Yeah. I think it used to be, too. Mighta read something, chevron didn’t want the hassle of metrifying the bottle?? Not sure.

I've used that and a few other ones and then I found Royal Purple. It's like adding a turbo charger to my Prius, I can almost feel the rear wheels doing a burn out :D

Of course in the USA we can go TopTierGas.com stations and get a good dose of detergents. My area is almost all TopTier so I do not worry about detergents. In the golden oldy days (pre ~Year 2000 or so), before EPA mandated US gasoline recipes, typically the better cleaning additives would be found in Premium grades, and Premium was marketed as such. In other countries, that may still be the case, not sure.

If by "good dose" you really mean the mandated minimum quantity, then that is right.

The consumer has absolutely, positively NO WAY to know for sure if any gas that comes out of the pump has any detergents over the mandated minimum or not.

In fact, you don't really know if even the minimum is really in there.
But I think it is a fair assumption that the major players are following the rules about formulations.

A bit late to this discussion, but Top Tier gasoline claims to have significantly more than the mandated minimum quantity. The big names, e.g., Shell, BP, Mobil, Marathon (and others I don't see around these parts), plus Costco (but not Sam's Club), plus Meijer (Midwest supermarket chain).

Claims are not facts. Especially marketing claims.

UNLESS you live in an area where the gas stations get their product DIRECTLY from a "top tier" refinery, you don't know what is or isn't in the gas that they do get.

Gasoline is mostly a "commodity product" these days. That is, it is all the same in most places because it all comes out of the same pipeline into the remote depot where the trucks fill up.

So.....in that case, you are depending upon the depot operator, truck driver or station owner to actually put in the additives that really make it "Top Tier". YOU might trust that that happens correctly 100% of the time but my guess is MUCH lower than that.

    According to a AAA study:

BMW, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, Acura/Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Navistar, and Audi all recommend using Top Tier gasoline.

I don't think any independent/third party tests fuel from stations to ensure it meets top tier standards (like various agencies do to ensure you get at least 95% of every gallon the pump says it puts into your tank). But I can tell you that my local oil distributor has different tanks for different stations and the Indian Casino, a TA truck stop, & a consortium of mom & pop stations all draw from a separate tank than top tier Arco, Costco, & Valero. Truck drivers from this facility do not put additives in, nor do gas station owners. I presume the distributor does or it comes off the train with additives already in it.

Chevron, 76, & Shell don't get gas from the local distributor so I can't speak to their procedures. I do know my aunt owned a station that used to be independent, but became a Chevron affiliate and now Chevron manages the fuel 100% - right down to which credit cards are accepted at the pump.
