New bulb in the license plate socket housing will not light. Housing looks burned out.

Failed inspection on this small lightbulb and discovering this might be a larger fix.

Would I need to order a replacement bulb housing? If so, from where or part number? Maybe pull it from a yard? I am handy enough with working, any best practices or recommended fixes?

The incandescent bulbs are know to melt the sockets. That's why many users have switched to LED's.

    These work perfectly.

    That look right, plus LEDs?
(These little bulbs also burn out often)

noticing my link vanished and presume you also had a link. I am seeing reference to Amazon - is there an item number or specific key words for a search since link has been censored?

    Prefer Amazon over eBay...

On eBay, does this look like the replacement?
GENUINE TOYOTA LICENSE PLATE & MARKER LIGHT BULB SOCKET CONNECTOR OEM 9007599011

Yes, added the dorman to the cart, but Amazon is saying it doesn’t fit? 2012 Prius PIP?

And...it says backup light...so presume they are the same harnesses?

I’ve replaced our (gen 3) license plate bulbs a few times; socket looks ok. The bulbs I get from dealership parts dept ($2.40 CDN apiece) are Toyota part no:

Socket housing looks slightly browned to me from the heat of the bulb, but not otherwise damaged or misshapen.

The metal contacts within it may have formed an oxide layer and now aren't making good contact with a new bulb. (That could also interfere with a LED replacement bulb.)

Shining up the contact surfaces might be all that's needed (trick would be shaping a little tool to get in there with some slightly abrasive metal polish) followed by using a good electrical grease on the replacement bulb (whether incandescent or LED) to prevent oxidation from returning.

Replacement sockets from Toyota wouldn't break the bank; then there would be no question they're direct plug-in replacements, no splicing or fuss. Maybe the aftermarket ones are too; I haven't looked.

Note: I looked up the parts for 2002 because of the OP's profile, but of course that doesn't jibe with this being in the Prime forum.

Correct - socket is working - sort of...I did try to clean the contacts ..and preferred it best practice for auto bulb sockets?

...with bulb fully seaters or close to properly seared the bulb will not light. With power on, the bulb will light while moving bulb into position. Only worked when built was less than 1/2 way into position. This also led to buoy turning white and then breaking apart. I am now out of bulbs to try until Amazon order arrives. Oh, will any internal cabin or done lights work? This way I can at least pass inspection today (crazy to be held up from passing h over a license plate light)

Want to say thank you. Got LEDS, they work perfectly and now thinking about updating the small bulbs to led, so much nicer.
