Had the local garage do an oil change on 2009, & wheel bearing (was sounding much like Sebulba's pod racer from Star Wars 1 going down the road, but is silent now). They did great, though I noticed immediately that it was making a sound that I had heard a tiny bit of before, though now for much longer duration and perhaps more pronounced as I accelerated, a sound perhaps from under the hood, like constant shaking yahtzee dice as it spooled up speed. After driving for a bit it lessens considerably as if 'warming up' the engine makes a difference. Happens mostly when cold, and under acceleration. I wonder what this sound is! I checked the dipstick and it was perfect. They also did front brakes and rotors as it happens though the reservoir is a little bit low. That couldn't be this sound. I am curious as to what is causing this sound, anyone happen to run into this sound before?

Just a guess: did you happen to just gas up, too? Maybe carbon in the cylinder heads is building up (becoming "glow plugs"), and coupled with poor gas, you're getting preignition?

Hey Mendel. Thank you for the guess. My working understanding is that I should use low octane unleaded in this car which is what I'm doing. I am going to try to record the sound as I leave work this afternoon. Some sorta valve chatter maybe? Preignition is within the realm of possibility. Lots of things could chatter, could be like a flywheel chatter or... something else mechanical I don't even know, I haven't yet come to a good visualization as to how overall the system works. It doesn't sound disastrous but, would like to get to the bottom of it.

Considering the prius has a knock sensor, I would think that pre-ignition is unlikely.

Maybe post a sound file so the experts can weigh in more effectively

I recorded the noise, but it does not come through in the way that I hear it in the car. Not sure it is identifiable in the audio file, I'll listen to it again and post if I think it might be of value. Thanks for the thoughts!

Wow there's no way to attach an audio file here. Won't load an .m4a. I'll have to upload it to somewhere.

Not finding it. I find "media gallery embed", but that must not be what you are referencing, it seems only to accept images or url's. No doubt it's obvious but if you could point me a little more toward that, would be great... Wait, I got it. Jeez.

Not a great example, didn't think when I attempted to record this, that I would be including the video, only the audio which is why I'm explaining the obvious.

hmm. Video doesn't seem to work, maybe it will take awhile to come into it.

I've never seen any media work in this PC repository.

If you have a YouTube account you can upload your video to YT and link it back here.

Thanks for all of the suggestions as to how I might upload a file to a cloud server then link to it and post the link here. Guess I feel that there's enough dead links on the internet already. Thanks to all for having tried to help.
