    The used car market is crazy right now! Not sure about elsewhere in the world but on the west coast of the United States the price for used Prius is soaring due to chip shortage and people waiting for electric cars to be more available and delaying their new car purchase. In the past year I've seen Gen2 Prius barely selling for $5K now Selling for $10K.

    I love doing restoration work on these cars, but problem is most owners don't share the same enthusiasm and aren't willing to spend much money on 'em. However, now that these cars are selling for such a high price it's a perfect opportunity to buy one and put many thousands of dollars of mods & upgrades into it and most likely get all my money back when I sell it next Summer.

    So I got a reasonable price on the purchase of a 2005 with 134K miles that was down the street from me and featured here: Newbie in need of advice. | PriusChat

    I replaced the throttle body and still need to replace heater valve and coolant heat storage pump. Also needs bondo work on the front hood and both front and rear bumper skirts will be replaced or repainted due to usual dents and dings.

    Also bought a set of Gen3 wheels that I'm gonna do a custom paint job on. And have plenty of plans to spray new plastic-dip accents on the car and also do most of the mods I have on my own Prius in my signature line below.

    So I wanted to ask PriusChat folks what else should be done? What are your ideas?

    What would be the coolest most over the top features to add to what will soon be a near mint condition Gen2 Prius? Think of it more as an art project than anything else. The more beautiful I can make this car the better!

    Thanks Nancy, that's a good one I'd not yet considered! I've always wanted to learn how to do window tint.

    Also I totally agree, there's a fine line between car mods that accentuate/simplify the existing look vs. mods that make it look ostentatious & ugly...

    My suggestions for Gen2 mods/upgrades:

    1. LED headlight bulbs if car does NOT have halogen bulbs. My preference is to use whitest bulbs possible (IMHO. blue tinted light looks bush league).

    2. Driving lights if not factory installed;

    3. Sliding organization box fior center console;

    4. Oil/water separator installed in PCV system;

    5. Leather seats front and rear;

    6. Plastic liner for hatchback luggage area;

    7. 3.5mm to bluetooth adapter thereby allowing easy music transfer from cell to car speakers via bluetooth,

    8. Long cell holder that mounts to seat bolt on passenger seat;

    9. Custom button to allow rear camera to be actuated when driving forward;

    10. After market TPMS system which provides actual PSI and includes sensor for spare tireI.

    11. Trailer hitch and rear rack for cargo or bicycles.

    12. Low rolling resistance tires (if not already installed);

    13. Green dash LED which lights when Cruise is actuated;

    14. Block heater;

    15. Synthetic CVT trans fluid which provides increased MPG;

    16. Electric horn which gives big truck sound. I would wire truck horn in manner that presents choice of i.) stock, horn, ii.) truck horn, or iii.), both horns. All actuated via toggle switches and relay.

    17. Replace sunglasses holder with small dedicated Garmin GPS that folds down like sunglasses holder;

    18. Dash cameras to record both front and rear.

    19. New gas struts for hatchback that pops hatch open without assistance when hatch is released.

    20. Hatchback release button (preferably salvaged from a GM car - think big yellow momentary switch) installed in glove box,

    21. Well installed Apple airtag so that location can be tracked;

    22. Install kick sensor to open hatchback;

    23. Create cell app to open rear hatch;

    24. Install coinholder/organizer in console (or in cubby beneath radio);

    25. Custom fabricated filter for air intake into HV battery air cooling system;

    26. Create custom ply boxes that fit .between spare tire and hatchback
    floor;

    27. Replace dome and nap lights bulbs with LED bulbs; and

    28. Install upgraded shifter knob.

    That is all for now. Best of luck.

    I'd be inclined to just keep it stock, but chase down all the "issues". Do the brakes, replace fluids, replace burnt out bulbs, that sort of thing. For TLC: repair any body damage, wash-and-wax, clean the interior, and maybe clean up and rust proof the underside.

    Additional mods/upgrades:

    29. Install two cheap carabiners clips on passenger side headrest support rods. Thereby allowing you to clip garbage bag to the back of the passenger seat.

    30. Add small 12VDC to 120VAC inverter (say 600W to 800W constant use rating) in hatch area. Thereby allowing use of 120VDC items that do not draw more than 5 or 6 amps.

    I have not done this hack yet. But the best guidance (that I have found so far) is at the following linked article: http : / /www. evnut.com/ prius_mfd_video.htm

    Reverse video

    PS This article provides two different methods to accomplish the same thing (IIRC, one method involves removing the dash to accomplish the hack while the second method involves working in close quarters in the hatch without dash removal).

    PPS The above link is also cited on Prius Chat at the following thread: https:// priuschat.com/threads/always-on-backup-camera.35332/

    This car is a 2005, so no backup camera, but I love the idea of putting an android device in the sunglasses holder and setting up OBD2 w/apps, as well as aftermarket backup camera.

    Just a quick update to this project... Winter and other Prius needing attention have slowed things down... But I have made a little progress with designing where black rubberize plastic peel-coat paint is going, tested out modified headlight case that have had most of the chrome blackened. Also got the title cleaned up and in my name. So far only harm done in car sitting for so long is GreenTech pack needs a charge and balance. Of course I plan to swap this pack out with a Lithium pack before the project is done, so doesn't really matter how unreliable the rebuilt pack is.

    On the horizon is converting all bulbs over to LED. There's lots of cheap bulb kits to try and though I really can't stand blue LED light in 6000 temp and would prefer something warmer down in the under 5000 range, nobody seems to make those?

    Meanwhile as gas prices go up and up and, the value of this car once its in perfect condition is gonna be the same!

    Anyways... Anyone have any additional suggestions on how to make this Prius the coolest looking Prius ever?

    Sign me up for #10 since the TPMS light is the last one on my dashboard to be fixed. What aftermarket sensors are the best?

    Also #17 the sunglass holder GPS (although I like that this sunglass holder accepts modern curved glasses, 2001 Toyotas didn't)
    #20 does it actually release the hatch? I have new gas lifts, but they don't auto-lift from closed position.
    #25 a light weight hi-flow air filter might be a good idea after I clean it up for the first time

    I am working on replacing interior and maybe headlights with LED (I can wait on the headlights as I just polished the headlight covers so the stock headlights seem brighter for now). These were some interior LEDs that has Warm White options near 3000K. I haven't tried them yet as last I checked they were our of stock, see to be in stock now. Put in your year/model and it will tell you all of the bulbs. Map light: 194 CAN Bus LED Bulb - 5 SMD LED Tower - Miniature Wedge Base | Super Bright LEDs

    Thanks for that link... So eager for lots of options for all LED lights down in the 4500K range... Blue light is bad for you because it's closer to UV light which we all know that too much of is bad for eyes & skin / personal health.

    I would try to do what no one has done before. Take all of the suggestions and figure out what's better and not a current option, then shoot for that goal.

    My suggestion, swap a Plug-in battery in your car or even the plugin components. Make your car AWD is another, Im almost done on my Gen 3, Gen 4 will be done sooner.

    Push to be different and when they tell you it can't be done, you say "here, hold my beer".

    Thank you @black_jmyntrn, you reminded me that I want to add this to my list:

    31. Winch in the front emblem (just for that one time when I might need it), too cool!

    Like having 4x4 on my old Tahoe, not much use in Cali but when you need it you're glad you have it. This one time, coming over the grapevine CHP shut it down due to snowy conditions... in California... I was the only vehicle that they let up through pine mountain club, since I always carried chains and had them on it was a gorgeous New Years' Eve through fresh snow and no other vehicles on the road.

    Or this time I used the winch to help out someone who needed help.

    It's time to revive this thread and get this project car fixed up and ready to sell. I've been buying lots of stuff for it to make it the coolest looking Prius possible and will be updating this thread with all the mods and hopefully it'll help the buyer realize this is a great opportunity to own a classic Prius/collector's car!

    Last night I posted about the Gen3 wheels and unique sized tires I'm putting on it, as well as how they worked on a long road trip to California to break them in / test them on my daily driver: Alternative Wheel and Tire Sizes | PriusChat
