    Hello,
Bought a used 2004 Prius and other than battery replacement, haven't had the pleasure of dealing with fobs, specifically programming, or dancing. The car came with one fob, apparently a generic one, plain black, with the key. The fob powers the vehicle but the smart functions, lock, unlock, don't work. Is there a procedure for programming it, or something a locksmith or mechanic with equipment to set it up? I tried one of the dances on youtube for a similar issue/scenario but it doesn't work.

    Thanks

If you have an '04 you cannot have SKS I believe 04 and 05 I think because I had a loaded tourer with the good stereo and the GPS and all that but no SKS it's a black logo remote I think and it didn't have the buttons on the door the sensors on the door handles or any of that I don't think it knew when I walked up to it it didn't unlock and all that but the buttons on the remote worked so maybe this person just bought the remote to stick in the slot but then that wouldn't make any sense. I guess maybe try to replace the battery first just to see if that might have any effect

When you say "smart functions" do you mean the doors don't lock or unlock when you push the buttons on the fob, or is this an SKS model with a non-SKS key? Or did I read that wrong? :D

Interesting. I didn't realize it may not be equipped with sks. Checked the fob battery. Measured 2.8v although it still powered vehicle. Regardless, replaced with a good 3volt. Apparently, there are 2 variants of the 2004, one with sks,and one without. I found one discussion that says, "I'm pretty sure if you have the lock buttons on the door handles and hatch door, then it has the Smart Key System."
Although pretty sure isn't convincing. My vehicle does have lock buttons on the handles. Thanks

Correct; doors don't lock/unlcok with the push of buttons. The jury is out on whether it has SKS. I checked with Toyota using vin and they say it should have smart key capability. They said to replace fob battery, which i already did. Naturally they referred me to the dealer.
    Thanks.

So you can have a car with buttons on the door handles and the sensors and not have SKS so then the buttons on the door and all that what are they just there for looks and do nothing or do they work in my '09 when I walk up to the trunk The trunk unlocks and I push the button and open it I don't even have to pull the fob out of my pocket on my '05 none of that went on I could walk up to the car all day long but the key fob in my pocket or wherever and nothing was going to do anything till like pull the key fob out of my pocket and hit the unlock icon

So, what can you do with this fob? Do any of the remote lock - unlock buttons work? Do you have to put the fob in the dash slot every time in order to start the car? Look under the steering column- are there black buttons under there- if so what do they say?

You could have a "generic" aftermarket case for your fob. Can't tell if it's a SKS fob or not, if the SKS system works or not. Would want to scan all the ecu's on the car with a prius "compatible" scantool.

Most procedures that are used to add a NEW key fob on a SKS system require at least 1 fully functional fob. The dealer and some well equipped locksmiths can get a "seed code" that will reset the certification ecu and allow it to accept replacement fobs without any old fobs.

Right. I was able to get the details for the vehicle using the vin. It does list Remote keyless entry/ Engine immobilizer.
