About a quart every 5,000 miles, original head gasket....

No one is forcing to keep the car.... I'll take it if you don't want it.

No, those products cause more harm than good. It is very thick and often ruin seals over long periods. The problem is usually the clogged piston oil ring. We can reduce it slowly by using high detergent 0w-20 engine oil like Mobil1 ESP or extended performance or any DexosD, vw 508/509 certified oil.

    Tim,

I luckily skipped the Gen 3 Prius. I had a 2004 Prius for 12 years and 288k miles (replaced the traction battery at 195k miles - less than 2 cents/mile) with very few problems - a great car. My experience with the Gen 4 Prii although not as long (my 2016 was killed by a kamikaze deer) and my 2020 AWDe (only 2 years old) have both been great cars so far.

    No problems with my Pruis.
No inverter problems, no head gasket problems.
But, I did the services. Cleaned the egr system a few times, changed fluids, spark plugs, filters....
Used the Prolong system on the hybrid battery.
    SUPER GREAT CAR!

Put a few hundred thousand miles on a 76 Corona wagon, 2 78 Corolla's, a few hundred thousand
    miles on them.

    282,225 miles, today.
PRIUS IS A GREAT CAR! Everyone should own one!
"IF" there is a problem, I'll fix it. No labor cost.
And STILL a lot less than $30,000 for a new car, if you can find one! (y):whistle::whistle::whistle:

We talk about statistics number. The 2010-2011 is the worst in term of oil consumption. The 2015 model is the best and very few has problems. There are many has no issue even beyond 300k miles but many also have issues before reaching 200k miles. I noticed fewer problems in europe because better standard engine oil sold there, super 95/ AKI 89 gasoline, majority E5 instead of E10. But also, people are more aware about maintenance better.

Why would the 2012 through 2014 be any better? The oil ring revision happened partway through model year 2014, and AFAIK that's the only change.

I understand it completely, i only use statistics from carcomplaint.com and what my mechanics said. Somehow the 2010-2011 has much higher failure rate. But it is indeed true, the 2015 model really have much less issue after the piston amd rings update.

"Somehow" because the 2010-2011s sold in larger numbers AND are older AND have more mileage, on average. Did your statistical analysis account for all those factors?

Yes, it is already counted. If the 2013 has problems it will show up with similar number after almost 10 years now. The problems in 2010-2011 showed up within the first 6 years but 2012-2015 still have much lesser issue after 6 years.

    2010 Toyota Prius | CarComplaints.com

One of the reason, many 2010-2011 owners has no knowledge how important using full synthetic 0w-20 is, and often they went to quick lube or walmart $25 oil change. And remember, not all Toyota dealership use Toyota engine oil, sometimes whatever the cheapest 0w-20 they can get. There are some 2010-2011 owners with 200k miles or more but still have less than 1L/10k miles oil consumption. By the year 2013, almost all oil require GF5 standardisation

Are you familiar with the idea that the reliability of any particular car year/model is a bell curve? Perhaps you got one at the bottom of the curve in terms of it being a statistical outlier in having things go bad. Every single car model year has better and worse individual vehicles (which can be exacerbated by how the car is cared for). I'd be mad too if I got a lemon like yours.

And I'm not denying that the 2010 Prius has a poorly designed EGR and bad piston valves. That is well known. I am in denial that the rest of the car sucks.

Maybe it is because my 2010 only has 115,000 miles on it, but knock on wood it has been rock solid reliable so far. Not a single issue ever with anything. I'll be willing to eat my words if my fortune changes by the time I get to 200,000 miles.

What mileages did you have those various problems at?

Most people who have the problems are either cheap on maintenance or get it as a used car with no maintenance history. Even the worst 2010 models often are still running well beyond 200k miles if the owners keep it in shape from new. We got tons of bad reports on the 2010-2011 production because most people who owned them are often ignorant about the maintenance and how important using a full synthetic oil with 10k miles intervals is.
Once oil consumption started, EGR needs to be cleaned more often to reduce pinging, head gasket failure, and dead catalytic converter. But it is indeed true, very often 2010-2011 owners have either or all of these problems.
