it's cool how the oil education progressed here. a few years back the standard response was "0w20 or your engine blows apart."

Hi Christian_cool and all other Prius 2010 drivers with excessive oil consumption.
I have the issue of excessive oil consumption with my Prius 2010 and I would like to know what is your feedback on the possible use of 5W-40 like Shell Helix Ultra ?
I think that I will try the same type of oil but I wanted to know first what is your feedback about it after 2 years ?
    Many thanks
    O.

On some cars, they use oil due to the piston rings being carboned. Always use Tier 1 gas. Someone on the board used 4 continuous tanks of gas with Techron Fuel system cleaner additive and it stopped his consumption. I assume due cleansing of the rings. It is worth a try.

After reading threads like these, I decided to give Mobil1 5w-40 a try. 07 with 169k miles. about 49 MPG so far, but should be 51. Maybe oil needs to break in a little. Will report back here... I even removed 100lbs of comic books from the trunk :( Engine is burning about a quart every ~5k miles.

Hey man you shouldn't even worry about burning a quart every 5000 miles. Thats considered good. lol
    Just to ease your mind.
Also, 5w-40 is fine. May or may not be any different on oil consumption than whatever is spec'd for a gen 2 so thats up to you to figure out.

10k interval not a reasonable thing for 10-11 models, max 5k or 6 months otherwise burning oil and other following issues inevitable. If I were you, I'd try mobil 1 0w-30 too And after a few short term oil changes, it may go back to normal oil range if things getting more cleaned, of unless a physical damage on cylinder(s)

Sure makes you wonder doesn't it. The 2010 Prius came out with a 5k oil change interval. Those geniuses changed it after the car came out. Thats why the oil minder comes on every 5k. I would say to do 5k or less oci on all cars as oil is cheaper and easier than motors.
