The only Toyota brand stuff I buy is the coolant and transmission fluid. Just because it’s changed rarely and no chance of the formulation not being OEM. I use Amsoil on the Prius.

You'll only get 190,000 mi out of your third gen and it has less to do with your choice of oil then more to do with the head gasket popping and the need for a hybrid battery shortly thereafter as well as a radio and an unfortunate accident that none of us ever see coming and lots of other life factors. Mobil one Pennzoil Platinum Castrol synthetic, they're all great. Kirkland and Walmart oil are probably okay too

Toyota oil comes in bulk oil drums from a local supplier in their town I'm pretty sure it will not come from Toyota itself I don't think they're really in the oil business like that they purchase oil and bulk from their approved sources in whatever given countries at least that's how it's been every dealer I've worked at maybe that's changed in the last few years but I kind of doubt it because when you go to the dealer you see 55 gallon drums of oil You also see some quarts in the parts department.

The racket these little solid lifter engines make running a 20m weight oil was always disturbing to me. Sounded like a sewing machine on steroids. I am cursed with very good hearing as I lost an eye from trauma when i was a child and it seems my hearing has compensated for it. I hear things no one else hears and sometimes that's horrible lol...

I ran a 20 weight oil once in my car and never again in my bought new 07. Ran a 30 weight oil for almost 15 years with that car no issues. With Toyota low tension rings Your way better off running a 30 weight oil. You can buy a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 5-30 at Walmart for $25. last I looked. That's a pretty good oil and your car takes 5 quarts. With a $5 OEM filter and $25 for the oil your at $30 for an oil change + labor.
    That's pretty good.

Sifting through your voice-dictated rambling, I think you're saying Toyota bulk oil is "any oil"? I don't think that's true. Not that I know much more, but my take is it is a specific oil, manufactured and quality controlled. It's all I used up till about 2 years back, when the price went through the roof and they (local dealership) finally refused to sell it to me in bulk.

In the US you go over to the Toyota dealer and just look at the drums sitting over there in the designated area You can walk over there and look at them and read the labeling on the tops of the drum I'll go take some pictures next time I'm over there It comes from the local oil distributor I do believe they have 020 030 straight 30 weight a few others here and there I'm not saying it doesn't come from Toyota but it looks to me like it comes from a place like MM Fowler oil company which is the local BP Sunoco and whatever is under that umbrella dealer they selling 55 gallon drums down to quarts stock local convenience stores and all of that matter of fact this company owns convenience stores since it got out of gas stations. But anyway it's all good that's in the States now in Canada things may be different at least in appearance they may not let you near the oil drums in Canada I have no idea

Maybe that's your local (more unscrupulous than usual) Toyota dealership.

Here the price did go through the roof though, making it more expensive for me to bring-my-own-bottle, get their bulk oil. Which is nuts.

Yep, the oil at the Toyota Dealer is, more than likely, the same el-cheapo crap quick-lube and Walmart auto centers use. It's sad...you spend PREMO dollars for an oil change at a dealer and get the same oil you could get spending half as much money at a Jiffy Lube!
One of the many reason I learned to changed my own oil (and now all maintenance) starting in the 80's.

That is Mobil 1 brand. No reason to stick with oem oil! Not when M1 oil is great for a Prius....its probably better than owm Toyota.

Me, too, and I've noticed the 0W-16 from Mobile isn't as clear as it used to be so they must've added a darkening agent. I like that, the clear stuff made reading the dipstick very difficult unless you're in a bright light.
