Walmart changes my oil I change my head gaskets. Follow along! (HALP)

    Schematics schematics okay it looks the part number in question is 11434J looks like there are supposed to be two in the block I can't find a pairing part for the head... Is it one part that sits in two holes?

    Yep. The lower half rests in the block, and the upper in the head.

    Okay the shop fixed it and I threw the head back on. Working on the timing now. The chain gave me all kinds of trouble but I got it all back together.

    When I took it off the marks weren't in the right spot (Probably takes multiple rotations to get them to line back up)

    The chain didn't wanna go back on the cams right and I had to adjust them a lot. Once I got it all back together the chain seems very tense is it supposed to be like that?

    It was hell getting the chain guides back in to...

    Is there a test I can do to make sure I have it timed correctly? You know without destroying the engine? Lol

    After I get the timing cover on I just have a bunch of wires and hoses to plug up and I need to finish cleaning the EGR and I'll be all done

    You can lock down the cams with a wrag or paper towel under the first cam cap,
    closes to the sprockets.
    Once you install the timing chain properly, put the crank pully on and rotate the engine
    720 degrees, rotate two complete turns. All three marks should once again align in the proper
    spots. The cold color links will not though. I think you'd have to rotate the engine 30 times before
    that happens again. Just turn slowly so the chain doesn't jump. You'll have to remove the rag or
    paper towels from the cam cap.

    Be cautious snugging down the "bridge" piece over the rags too; IIRC someone managed by crack it.

    I finally got it all back together and fired it up today with a couple issues. I'm definitely leaking a little my sealant application was uhh bad... I'll have to try sealing it again...

    I also got these error codes:
    P0335 is crankshaft position sensor, chip malfunction. P0338 is crankshaft position sensor, high input.

    Based on some searches looks like the timing might be off. I'm certain I got both of the cam's lined up with the marks on the chain as well as the dot on the crankshaft gear... I wonder if the chain jumped when I installed the tensioner or something...

    I guess I'll open it back up and inspect the timing and reseal the cover while I'm there...

    The timing cover is leaking in at least two places near the top in the back and at the bottom. There is also a coolant leak somewhere over by the water pump. My guess is that coolant passage on the front near the middle of the timing cover is dripping.

    I'm going to take it back off and this time apply the sealant to the cover instead of the engine. Hopefully a good seal will keep it from leaking.

    in your post New head gasket replacement video from Gasket Masters | PriusChat why does it make it look like the crankshaft keyway and dot are at 10 and 2? The 3rd gen engine, full text link in your bio shows it at 12 and 3. (The video above contains the time code to start it right around where it shows what I'm talking about)

    So I got the fluids drained and got the engine mount and cam cover back off... I rotated the engine to TDC where the timing marks align again.

    I haven't got the timing cover off to expose the lower sprocket yet but I Inspected it with a mirror and it seems like the dot and the colored link are still aligned...

    I hope it's off a tooth. Otherwise there is something fundamental I have misunderstood about setting the timing that I'm missing in the texts and video guides... hmmm

    Hey how many cam positions sensors are there? Is A the sensor on the intake (front right of valve cover)?

    Yeah the repair manual seems to assume engine is out when the timing chain cover goes on. With just the cover off, applying the FIP gasket bead to the cover seems a LOT more practical. I like the gasket masters technique too (at least in some videos): they do just do dabs along the path, then smear them together with a finger tip.

    Besides the gasket zones around cover perimeter, Toyota recommends beads horizontally at the engine’s split-lines; those I’d think are best applied to the engine face, not the cover.

    plus there’s some additional bead required, around one bolt in the middle of the cover, and in vicinity of water pump, IIRC. See last link in my signature, full engine excerpt, should have info on that.

    FIP gasket choice for DIY is a consideration too: the Toyota spec product has a very short cure time, arguably more suited for robotic application in factory, not that practical for DIY. Gasket Masters use Permatex Ultra-Black IIRC, allows more leisurely application, needs longer cure time.

    I think I got it I resealed the cover and put fluids in and it looks like it's holding.

    I threw everything back together and turned the car on.
    No codes but at first it didn't sound right... But I did some uhh brave things and it smoothed out. I drove it a little bit limping at first then 20s 30s etc. I feel like it my timing was off it would be a LOT more dramatic... and wouldn't just magically go back to being smooth most of the time...

    Although there this occasional issue when I stop the car it's almost like the brakes slip for a minute and makes this really loud bang (Imagine if you would your whole brake assembly exploding pads rotors and all snapping right off)

    I think all I can do is replace all the brake components and hope...

    Now that the head gasket issues are cleared up after I replace the brakes Id consider getting a shop involved for diagnostics and minor repairs.

    The repair Manual shows the engine as it would look out of the car and on an engine stand. Straight up and down. In the car the engine and timing assembly is tilted back.
