Was the radiator full to start with?

I got 3.8 litres out when I did mine. Never figured out why it was so little. I eventually got 3.8 L back in but initially only got 2.8 L in.

I didn't check the level in the radiator actually. The tank was at the full line, but I am not sure about the radiator before I started (it is full now).

I was also wondering whether you need to open the radiator cock and engine block at the same time. I did one and then the other. Maybe that creates an air lock or something?

Not sure. I did the same, I drained the majority from the radiator before opening the engine block drain. Very little came out the engine block.

I guess I'll try doing both drains at the same time. Also setting the heater to high temp first.

If I can only get out 3L again, at least I've changed 3L twice. If so, I'll just wait a while and just drain the radiator a third time. That is quick and easy. Don't even need to jack up the car.

Sure there must be a proper way to drain all 5.3L in one go, though.

As long as the radiator cap is off, it shouldn't make any difference.

Not sure then why I only got out 3L out of the 5.3L... Unless it's because I didn't set the heater to high temp before doing the drain

Worth noting: you’ll never get the specd volume, some will always hang up in knooks and crannies.

but you shouldn’t be getting significantly less than what others are getting, following the same procedure.

Some coolant always remains in the compartments and pipes.

To drain as much coolant as possible from the engine systems, I raise the rear of the car while tilting the front of the car down.

To fill the engine system with coolant as much as possible, I raise the front of the car by driving onto a hill. Or two hills))

Thanks. Didn't try raising the rear of the car. But I guess that makes sense!
