Are the 17" tires really that much better for Gen 5?

    The 16" Prius touring wheels weigh 15 lbs. A 17" CT200H wheel weighs 25 lbs.

    All factory wheels have to meet Japanese and USA standards for strength. Besides being weaker magnesium corrodes more easily and if it catches fire in a crash it cannot be extinguished. One fault of the Prius touring wheel is that they corrode at the tire bead area and it causes slow leaks.

    Just be happy with what came on your car. LOL Besides, I haven’t seen a single aftermarket wheel that looked good on a Gen 5 Prius yet. Moreover, when people remove their wheel covers, the bare wheels under them also don’t look good. But then, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

    I still might consider them when my original tires wear out in a couple years. The CrossClimate 3 will be coming out in at least 205/55-17, which will do if it doesn't come out in either 195/60-17 or 195/50-19.

    Not bad, and kinda like the Gen 5 PHEV wheels!

    They're a dealership option in Japan. Modallista is a Toyota partner. I'm not nearly as big a fan of the 19" Modallista option(WingDancer XIX).

    If I wanted to spend the money to put these on for winter, or to let my other rims be for winter with these for summer, I'd grab these. They're nice. But as is, I'm okay with steelies for winter tires, as ice and snow and hidden curbs behind the snow can beat up steelies and I won't shed a single tear.

    IMG_2967.jpeg Glad that I put 225/50 R18 Zrated tires on the Prius. Cabot Trail is Awesome. Would recommend to anyone. Road has a lot of high speed corners in quick succession and elevation changes for hours on end. In Sport Mode the Prius got at least 10 to 15 miles of added EV range just from just regenerative braking while my daughter was driving in the last leg of the trail. Speed limit is 80 KPH (50MPH). Doubt that OEM 195/50 R19 would of handled the trail as well.

    I have been following this discussion (I should, since I started it!). Nothing here has really convinced me that the 17 inch (or 18 in the last post), or different size is that much better than the OEM.

    My two big problems are, no decent all weather (like a Michelin Crossclimate 2) and no spare.

    I have pretty much decided to solve both problems like this: buy Michelin X-ice in the OEM 19 inch size before winter (my Toyo OEMs will have roughly 30-35K on them) and keep the best OEM as a spare. I suspect this solution will not be liked by many here, but given that I only drive 12k or so a year, with maybe half of that in snow country, I think my solution is the most cost effective, easiest and will mostly get the job done pretty well.
