I was wondering is the gen3 prius cat and 2017 prius prime the same? Im asking because the heat exchanger is broken and im leaking coolant out of the exhaust and my friend have a gen3 cat.

another question do i have to buy the whole center piece or i can just buy the green over lay?

They're identical. To confirm do some comparison shopping for catalytic converters for both 'em and see if there's any mention of them being different vs. compatible.

i thought gen 4 had less precious metals, which would be a new design, i would think.

The CATs are different and a totally different heat exchanger setup.

I believe the grill is a one piece unit from Toyota. You can try to find a used one and separate the front from the rear backing. You'll have to remove the whole front bumper assembly anyways - so snapping in the Toyota unit will speed up the process.

Apologies... I misread that. I thought you were comparing Gen4 regular to Gen4 Prime. There's a definite difference between Gen3 and Gen4 cats.

Technically speaking; it's illegal to install a used CAT in the Peoples Republic of Ca. (CARB rules). You do you, I'm not going to narc on you. Are you beyond your CARB emissions warranty? Have you checked with your local dealership, because there is a TSB out on this issue - so they may do a courtesy replacement if your nice and slightly beyond CARB warranty.
You can pressure or vacuum test the exchanger for leaks. Do Not exceed 15 psi; that's about the coolant pressure in your system.

    Good Luck

It would be easier to bypass it

Bottom bypass with standard Gates 18777 hose

Or a top engine level bypass, no parts required but the wiper assembly has to be removed to access hoses and temperature sensor.
