My dealer says it no longer gets 5w30 builk oil, but 5w20, which it stocks, is ok.
Temperatures can get to 100+ where I live. Will 5w20 offer sufficient protection?

Yeah that's getting water thin down there. For me anyway I'd have to look at chart in back of manual in oil section it shows the 20 range min n max temps etc. if I'm close to topping up at 20 temp max. I cannot do that the 30 has to go on I think 30 carries me to about 117 i think . But I'm not sure if even that . I know I've had it figured for about twenty years now and don't fool with it . Not an oil related issue in 40 some odd years of driving so I'll stick with..

If we are talking quality full synthetic oil; it should be fine - but since your going thinner, you need to keep an eye on oil burn. How much oil will it consume in 1K - 5K - 10K mile oil change intervals your doing. You don't want to run low on oil and damage your engine.

    Good Luck....

FWIW; whomever is doing your oil changes is FULL of IT; to put it nicely. You can walk into any store to pick up 5w30 motor oil.... Time to find another mechanic....

They talking about getting the oil in bulk at the dealership they only getting 0 20 or such . So what goes in all the other vehicles that don't take 020 they don't only work on 0 20 vehicles . So all the other vehicles they service they buy the oil in quart bottles yeah okay

    Tried googling:

ambient temp range 5w20 versus 5w30

Considering your summer temps, maybe just go to bottled. Any chance of DIY?

AI summary is saying 5W30 is better in the heat, not surprisingly.

I used to bring my own bottle to a dealership, get it filled with bulk 0W20, very reasonably priced. About 5 years back the price shot up, actually exceeding bottled price, which seemed nonsensical to me. I switched to Costco’s 4 quart 2-packs, produced by Warren Industries I’ve read.
