Another question: my friend is trying to reset the maintenence light on her 2014 after she changed the oil. I've tried what the book says, but it doesn't work. I've also tried online, and 2 different things didn't work either.

Not sure which battery maintainer you bought, but if it is the Noco Genius, the battery will recharge automatically, on and off every few days, as long as it is connected.

Back to my question about the odometer and temperature reading not changing since the dead battery. Is there something I need to do?

But it says to not use the trikle charge inside the car. I was hoping to put it next to the battery in the car and plug the charger into a backup battery. That sounds like it won't be safe. Do I have to remove the battery from the car?

Do I have to take it back to the dealer to reset them or will it happen eventually?

Again, if it is the Noco Genius, it could be left powered on and connected to the car indefinitely. No idea what you bought.

Those things never need a reset and shouldn’t be affected by a 12-V battery disconnect. If there is really a malfunction, no idea what the problem is.

Don’t keep the hatch open, though, as the light bulb will burn out. Those miniature tungsten bulbs have a life of only a few hundred hours. Use the 12 V service connector under the hood instead.

tungsten? lol. This is a Gen5!

I have a NOCO1 in the trunk, attached to the battery, just in case, or did I say that already?
My plan is to hook it up to a thin, flat extension cord. I do believe the weatherstripping will be okay when the hatch is closed.
The battery has a vent tube to the outside.

Giant leap in technology with the trunk light having been updated from tungsten to LED from Gen 4 to Gen 5! ;)

Yes; you should hook-up the RV battery maintainer under the hood. There is a jump-point there. Hopefully you purchased a maintainer that's capable of outputting at least 2+ amps. Leaving the hood up won't draw extra current and will remind you to unplug the car before taking-off. A three mile drive isn't long enough for the 12V battery to recharge itself. I also wouldn't plug-in the car everyday either. You need to work all of the car's systems, in order to keep them healthy - you know what they say, use it or lose it. You'll also need to run your gasoline engine for at least 30 minutes about every 3-4 weeks. That should be easy in the winter months to generate heat for the cabin. You just need to do the same in the summer months too. Again, to keep everything lubed-up and running.
As for the 2014 Prius; I believe the manual failed to mention that your odometer needs to be in factory default mode, before beginning the instructions to reset the maintenance minder. I believe your odometer need to be set for total miles - NOT tripA or tripB. It's been a while since I've done one of those; but I believe you need to turn-on the car and press a button 3 times; holding it down on the third. Your display should start counting-down and you must keep that button down. If you release that button before the end of the count-down, it won't let you in to reset the maintenance minder.
I also believe there's a couple of Youtube videos on this issue too..

    Good Luck....

Just wanted to show in attached image that in a 5th Gen Prius there's also a perfect slot available to route a charging cable under the hood between the rubber seal at the leading edge of the hood and the "tear duct" of the headlamp. I recall in my early attempts at leaving the hood up it seemed a warning kept appearing on the MID display that may not have gone away to my liking.
