I acquired a 2010 Gen-3 Prius. I like the 2014 prius backup oem camera, and would like it to have a grid feature. I think the grid lines are driven by the position of the steering wheel. Example:

Deepseek indicated the OEM system had this capability if navigation is installed and the lines would be static / automatically displayed while in revers. My 2010 has no lines when put into reverse.

Is there a procedure to either activate or load software for said feature?

For 2010, grid lines were added by the Parking Assist ECU, if the car came with parking assist, which was an option in higher trims, separate from the navigation option.

Without parking assist, the backup camera analog signal is wired directly to the nav unit, and the image is displayed without grid lines.

In a car with parking assist, the backup camera wires go to the Parking Assist ECU, and it superimposes grid lines (based on data from the steering angle sensor), and sends the combined image digitally to the GVIF input on the back of the nav unit.

How do I termite if the car was outfitted with parking assist?

    • Do you have this switch on the dash? [IMG]
    • Do you have grid lines on the backup camera display?

I think there's also a Toyota owners' site where you can supposedly enter your VIN and be told what trim and options the car had.

I'd take that with a grain of salt, 'cause I put my VIN in and was told my car's a V, when it's very definitely a IV from birth....

@ChapmanF: Thank you for the explanation and responses. My backup camera does not display grid lines nor does the Prius have said switch on the dash.

Is it possible to add said gridlines by plugging a Parking Assist ECU between the display and the camera? If yes, any links to success stories are appreciated.

I don't recall seeing threads where anyone has tried.

There could be a number of things to add: a dash switch, a parking assist ECU, and the various perimeter sensors it communicates with; you might need to replace wire harnesses, or modify the ones in the car with additional wires and connectors.

A quick check on feasibility would be to look in the wiring diagram:

Toyota Service Information and Where To Find It | PriusChat

The diagrams show wires that are and aren't present in different trim/option levels, showing them with asterisk-number combinations matching a legend on the diagram that tells which option goes with which asterisk-number. So, you can quickly get a sense of what wires, connections, and devices are found in a car with park assist that aren't in a car without it.
