Long story short, I am prepping to change my oil at home for the first time ever. 2008 touring.
I bought a 90915-YZZN1 filter and 65/67mm 14 flute cap wrench. The wrench is too small to remove the existing filter. This got me double checking my filter selection and I’m stumped. Everything online in searching by model and VIN says the N1 is the right filter. Apparently, I have a 90915-YZZD1 filter in it now - verified by my ex who did the oil changes for the last few years.

I don’t think they’re interchangeable. Is the N1 the way to go? If so, I suppose I’ll need a 73 or 74mm wrench to remove the D1?

90915-YZZN1 is what I'm using (on a gen 3 converted to spin-on style). I'd suspect the "65/67mm 14 flute cap wrench"; is it thin, stamped-steel? It should nestle in the 65 portion.

Honda's standard automotive oil filter socket (aka "oil wrench") is what I'm using, bought in a previous century for a motorcycle, when their automotive oil filters were larger. It's heavy-gauge, stamped steel, very durable, and perfect fit (for Honda, Toyota, Mazda, in my experience). Any Honda dealership could order it in.

I happen to have a filter on hand; the face-to-face dim of the flutes is 64.1 mm, for what it's worth. And the inside face-to-face dim on the oil filter socket is 64.4 mm.

I just use a 3600 filter the tall one and it screws on and off by hand only... for life . sooo uhh no filter wrenches . First time removal at new is done with my 20-in channel locks or slip joint pliers

Either one will "work", but the official OEM is suppose to be the N1. Some old-timers prefer to use the D1, larger filter and larger filtering area. For old-timers used to doing oil changes; they look at that small filter, extended oil change intervals, thin oil and say - this can't be right. That's why they use the D1, that filter size is closer to what they're used to changing.
Most people just use the smaller N1 without issues - it's just a personnel preference. If you have some sort of extended warranty package on that car, that's grounds for denying your repair claim. The insurance company can say you put the wrong filter on the car and that's why the engine blew up - illegal modification. I've seen insurance company refuse to pay because you had one odd ball tire out of 4. They were just looking for an excuse, not to pay. If you take them to court, you would probably win, but who has the time and money for that?

    Hope this helps.....
