My 2006 Prius has the gummy, melted black goo switch cover ... so my plan is to see if I can unscrew, pop the switch out, clean and replace with a new cover.

    This

    and this

look promising to me. The other links in this thread were dead or unavailable.

Numerous post hear but 2006 seemed unrepresented. :)

Links/pictures don't seem to be working, but I got mine from Ebay. Anywhere works alright, they're pretty easy to switch. The hardest part is definitely the cleaning the old gunk off.

Resurrecting an old thread but does any one know the size and length of the Phillips self-tapping screws...

"The hatch opening switch is secured with two Phillips self-tapping screws"

I'm heading to Florida to help my older sister swap out a broken plastic piece. I have a replacement plastic piece, a replacement switch/wiring harness, the M4 screws mentioned and the deep socket but I'm not sure about the Phillips screws.

She tried removing just the plastic part and couldn't budge any of the screws.

    Thanks for any help.

I would take a #2 JIS screwdriver, probably a set.

JIS is not the standard #2 Phillips. Phillips look similar but are designed to cam out (slip out) at a specified torque.

A JIS will not cam out and was designed in Japan for the fasteners used in their cars.

Vessel is the best brand. Most US local stores don't have JIS.

Thanks. My sister has the wide plastic piece and I have a new switch and harness so I don't need to take anything apart from the plastic piece from my understanding.

    1. Remove the inner cover from the trunk.
    2. Use the 10 mm deep socket to remove the 4 screws and maybe a vice-grips or pliers if the outside plastic is cracked.
    3. Unplug the old harness and remove it
    4. Attach the harness to the new plastic piece using M4 screws for one part and Phillips self tapping screws for the rest
    5. Reassemble it all.

So I shouldn't need to remove anything but the 10 mm screws.
