1500 miles and got a note on my rear door recall worksheet that driver side weatherstripping was torn. I hadn’t noticed it but it is indeed worn. See photo. Anyone else have this happen. I’m ultra careful getting and out of the car. Would this be a warrantee covered item? Any suggestions appreciated. J
I noticed mine wearing excessively in the first month I owned the car. It consists of a low quality rubber, which is quite susceptible to wear.
Have you done anything to mitigate further wear? I put a piece of clear shipping tape over the “wound” but that seems amateurish.
I had the same tear, same place. From the interwebs, I gather this is pretty common. I don't know what I was thinking, waited too long, and could not get it warranted.
I had same issue. Dealership refused this as a warranty issue. I haven’t done anything to try to fix it yet. The dealership said they could put new one on for a charge.
If anyone decides to replace theirs, please do it yourself and don't pay a dealership to do it for you. I can't think of many things easier to do on a car. Significantly easier than an oil change. <5min. I'd be tempted to order from Japan on this. $33 per seal before S&H from Impex Japan. $70-$80 per seal all-in from US dealerships during good sales. I've got some minor wear on my driver side. Consider turning off the setting that slides the seat back when you turn off the car, this may help with rubbing against it.
Silicone free? I thought silicone was good for rubber. https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-parts/bmw-bmw-gummi-pflege-rubber-care-83192449390
Gummi Pflege is really good on rubber seals. Keeps them from rotting with age, brings old rubber back to like-new condition. I've used it for several years on various cars.
I took a look at mine and have an idea as to why it's happening. Mine(3y/36k) is also failing, though the tear isn't as long yet as the OP's pic. I think it's happening because of how the door seal interacts with the plastic door card. The door card is made up of textured plastic. The failure point in the seal seems to start where the seal comes in contact with the vertical right angle in the door card. I think the rubber seal gets flattened as the door closes, and the edge of the squashed seal just barely brushes the vertical portion of the textured plastic. Over time and hundreds of openings and closings, I think the plastic acts as a sandpaper and abrades the edge of the seal until it wears a slit into it. Assuming Toyota doesn't step in, I see four solutions: 1. Ignore it. It doesn't compromise the car in any way, so you could just ignore it if you wanted to. 2. Replace the seal every 2-5 years depending on wear rate. (I fully understand why this isn't really appealing to anyone.) 3. Make sure to keep both the seal and door card clean and protected with some sort of coating that leaves a slickness that reduces friction. This should slow the rate of deterioration. I'm probably going to order a new seal eventually and then do this one from then on. 4. Sand away the texture from this portion of the door card. Start with something like 60 grit, then go through the grits up to 200-400. Once the plastic is nice and smooth, coat it with a protectant that makes it as slick as possible. This will probably solve the problem the best, but it's also destructive and non-reversable. I don't think I'm going to do it, but maybe someone else would.
What is a door card? Tnx. ed: I see what you are talking about. ed2: My car has south of 1500 miles on it and is 18 mos old. I've probably gotten in/out of it 200 times. The service tech says they think it's due to the cramped cabin people are rubbing against it while entering/exiting. I've been watching closely and that's not what's happening in my situation. FWIW ChatGPT says there is a decent chance Toyota whould warranty the repair if I pursued it with Toyota Customer Experience.
