I think there is no English version of the CD-ROM manual from Japan.

The confusion began with a little bit of code that Jeepien put in a different message on a different thread. When this code is used, I see the word "Marg" in the message, you see the word "snarfo", jayman seens the word "jayman" and so on....


Tony quoted Jeepien's original post in this thread (possibly not intentionally) which caused the confusion to spread a little bit.

Now, while you're seeing "snarfo" in Tony's message, I'm seeing "Marg".

Lol... I saw my name come up through clever use of the YOU command, and I did know the answer... So here it is:

"The shift control actuator is mounted on the side of the hybrid transaxle. Upon receiving an actuation signal from the transmission control ECU, the motor in the actuator rotates to move the parking lock rod, which slides the parking lock pawl, thus causing the parking lock pawl to engage with the parking gear that is installed on the counter driven gear. As a result, the hybrid transaxle is locked or unlocked mechanically."

 

So an electric motor pushes an actuator rod and moves the pawl into the splines? I can't wait until my shop manual arrives, there is a LOT to learn about this car.

A similar electric motor arrangement actuated the front axle disconnect on my 2000 GMC Sierra. Believe it or not, the front axle came factory filled with 80W-90, even for models sent to Canada and Alaska. 80W-90 turns solid at -12 F.

When I took delivery of my GMC, after a 1,000km break-in, I drained the front axle and refilled with a synthetic 75W-90. The dealer claimed I was nuts, wasting money, etc etc.

Then there were a rash of front axle failures. When the gear oil turned solid, the electric motor would burn out trying to move the actuator pawl in the front axle. The fork would usually force the collar just far enough on the splines to cause grinding, which would quickly destroy the axle.

I received notification of the TSB warning all dealers to immediately drain and refill every front axle on the lot, and to call their customers ASAP to do the same. Hehehe.

The Toyota CVT appears to already use a synthetic transmission fluid, so I wouldn't worry about the parking pawl motor burning out unless you were in Siberia. But "torque lock" on a hill is another matter. Use the parking brake, it's a good habit to get into.

 

As usual, cooler Canuck heads prevailed. Perhaps Marg should run for President down here...

Wow, thanks for the compliment! I just stumbled on this thread.. I'm really not an expert on the Prius at all! I didn't really know how it functioned but knew it was something along the lines explained here by those who really know the workings of the Prius.

P.S. In case anyone's confused my avatar is the Toyota Formula 1 logo. I'm in no way connected to Toyota at all! Just a fan!

Me too! Alta, Cottonwood, and Deer Valley have more than their fair share of snow, especially this year. But I'd never seen the kind of cold like here in Winnipeg.
