has anyone heard of this swap? is it possible to fit the larger engine into the prius? just curious as to what people think of this idea

    there really isn't room. *shrug*

in 04 Blitz made a custom turbo for the prius.. only to never make one again. It was too complicated for a production run.

It's an interesting question though. :)

but.. it make me wonder.. with engine swaps.. is the prius that much lighter than the camry?

plus.. the camry has independent suspension...

whew... good luck cramming a v6 in there.

edit... oops! forgot that's still an i4- either way the extra liter of displacement is gonna make a serious challenge in fitting that in there.

the prius weighs 2932 pounds, and the camry hybrid weighs 3680 pounds.(toyota website) the 2.4 hybrid camry engine is obviously heavier than the 1.5 prius engine, but the power to weight ratio should still be in favor of the larger engine

The only swap I am aware of is the one Toyota did, with the 1.5L out of an Echo. Basically the same engine, but not Atkinson cycle which boosts the ICE from 110 to 145 hp. This is the same engine used in the Xa, Xb, and Yaris, as well as lots of JDM only cars. Turbo kits are available that should make >200hp. :D

I'm assuming the real challenge would be the ECU. I'm assuming you can't just swap in the Echo/Scion/Yaris ECU and have everything be hunky-dory. I would bet Toyota did a custom ECU for their swap.

Given how much hood their is on a Camry, its hard to imagine fitting that system into a Prius.

Personally I'd like to try putting a Prius HSD into an Insight  That and maybe a Camry HSD in a Mazda 5.

so basically its a gas engine in a prius, so no electric... intresting... i was wondering what the mpg would likely be with 2.4 camry hybrid engine since the prius weighs 600 + pounds lighter than the camry hybrid. if 0-60 is 7.7 in the camry hybrid(car & driver), you could expect low 7 second 0-60 runs in a prius!

Why not put a second Prius engine and transaxel in the Prius? This was done with a Honda CRX a number of years ago. They took out the rear suspension and replaced it with a second engine and transaxel in the hatch area. It wasn't very practical, but I don't believe we are talking about practical ideas, are we?

I remember reading about the dual-engined CRX at a gas station, why they started the engine, and then started the second engine. That gained them some confused looks. You wouldn't get that same satisfaction with a Prius, but think of the control options, since you could run on one or two electric motors, and one or two ICEs. That makes for a lot of permutations.

Nope, its still has the full hybrid transaxle, motors batteries etc. They just swapped the ICE for a less efficient but more powerful version of the same engine.

Hmm, wonder how the Prius would run if I took my 6.1L out of my Jeep SRT8 and shoehorned it in there?

All the charge in the traction battery would probably be used up cranking that motor to speed :D

Easy swap....takes about 30 minutes with a 10mm wrench and a phillips head screwdriver.

What about putting the HyHi drive train into the Camry, I think that would be an easier retrofit as they both share the same chassis. you would have a real performer with 4WD function in a very practical 4 door sedan, with good economy to boot!!

    Forget the Camry engine swap....
It'll be easier to drop-in another electric-motor for the Prius' rear-axle to boost forward thrust.....and it'll be made 4WD too. :D

Isn't that what they did with the front wheels of the Hybrid Supra they were racing?

this is an 8 minute video of the race.. note the lack of pit stop sounds and the sharp turn where the ICE shuts down... later he revs to keep it from shutting down.

i noticed that it never "burns out"... maybe it's the same HSD.. but a larger system with gears... it would explain where the extra rpms are going...
