Hi long time MPG hypermiler and always wanted a prius. Also I like to fix cars and found a 2004 toyota dealer serviced prius with several issues, but a sales price of only $2300. Not sure if its a screamin deal or its just too much to fix. $2300 for a running prius II is unheard of.

    1. Exhaust leak. (not sure of the location yet) I know prius mufflers aren't cheap and i assume exhaust manifolds or cats are expensive as heck also. Not to mention rusted and difficult to remove and install in new england.

    2. Touch screen doesn't work. (I can live with out that maybe, but I think thats pretty vital for prius heat and radio operation right?) I've read that you can get used ones. Not sure of the price and complexity of removal and install though.

    3. Seller told me the dealer mentioned she needs to keep on headlight alignment issues that may be developing? I've done a little research to find the prius headlights can be quite problematic?

    4. The shifter is loose and its replacement is recommended. I am digging up more details but assume its just the knob and that is something I would hopefully be able to replace easy enough.

I would like to be #3 in line. Shouldn't we be helping OP with these problems or should we ignore so we can be next in line?

I actually got word the 2005 I'm working on with the transmission issue.....the owner wants to let me have it for $1000 bucks. and it runs............

On a serious note, I believe $2300 is a great deal on this car. If you were to part out the thing, it would be worth more than that.

All the issues you have can be solved with a donor vehicle. These seem all to be quite simple parts to replace. Nothing like a transmission!!

Nice. Thanks for the input guys. Thats great to know. She says exhaust hanger area of the muffler exhaust pipe so thats a good sign. I can do that job no problem.

SHe's been using the car with no touch screen for 4 years and can still use radio and also adjust heat with the steering wheel so I like that.

Then she said "The shifter handle, they said is attached to the transmission and is loose. So it is ok right now, but if it comes off, it will be stuck in whatever gear it was in when it broke, so they said this should really be replaced too."

Not sure about what exactualy is wrong here but I assume I can get to it and fix it or hire it out.

    I'm gonna get it tonight.

    180,000 miles. She's still a baby right!

The shifter is just an electrical device to select the mode you require of the transmission. It could be called a switch but it has no contacts "hall effect device", and is a plug in replacement.

These Prius cars are very reliable when they are new and with low miles. After lets say 180k miles, there could be many parts that have worn and need replacement, often at a higher price than a regular car. I'm very hesitant to fix the 2005 that I've been working on because of the high cost in repairs. The traction battery fails right around the 10 year mark and that's a another 4 digit expense. If you don't mind doing a lot of DIY, it may be worth while. But if you were to bring the repairs to a shop or dealer, it may be very expensive to own in the long run.

    1. If the leak/rusting is really bad, you could probably get most of the exhaust system from a junkyard for a couple hundred.

    2. The MFD is about $150-300 on ebay. Taking the dash apart to that point is pretty easy and there are severals guides and videos. You can do without replacing it, but you'll have much more control over the climate control using it vs the wheel controls.

    4. So its the shifter the driver uses to select gears that is loose? The shifter is really just a switch, it isn't physically connected to the transmission. I don't think its much harder to replace than the MFD, about $50-100 on ebay.

Looks like a good deal if you DIY, but if you take it to the dealer for repairs, it could get spendy.

and it took 3 months to sell. it's not california here, that's for sure, and gas prices have something to do with it, and they were higher then.

Yes we do drive on the wrong side, but we spell tires correctly.

    CORRECTION: Bisco spells tyres incorrectly

you'll always get a better deal coming east for an alternative fuel vehicle. although strangely, some great pip prices have shown up here from cali recently. we don't get a state incentive. dianne has over a hundred pips in stock, there probably aren't that many in massachusetts!:p

In that case you spell tyres wrong. Oxford English dictionary :- Rubber covering round a wheel to form soft contact with the road. Derived from 15 century iron curved plate that held a wooden wheel together.

I always have this type of conversation with my in laws from Brighton. Come here every year during winter for 2 months to harass me about my spelling. I can honestly say there is no winning in this debate.
