1.4 miles to work and 1.4 miles back from work

I don't know what tips you're going to try, but some people recommend allowing the car to complete its warmup cycle before driving it. This may work better for you, especially if you're that close to a highway. Good luck.

 

I'm moving in June and the drive to work is going from 3.32 miles to 1.48 miles. A savings of 1340 miles per year or about 28 gallons of gas or a little over $100 a year.

My commute is 3 miles each way and I find the following works best.
Use ECO mode to lessen the heater and A/C output or better still, switch the heater and A/C off, don't use the demister, pump up the tyres and put some soothing music on the entertainment system.

 

Wouldn't using an engine pre-heater help? I'm likely to buy a prius in a couple days, and I also have a short commute.

 

yes, an EBH would help, but doubt it will pay back. Maybe if you can plug in at work too for the drive home. Try it without first, then evaluate?

I want to plug my car in at night, but prefer it feed a HV pack, not make heat. EBH has the hassle of plugging in without moving me electrically. That said, yes it will improve short trip mpg.

 

Maybe adding an EBH to any non-hybrid would help too? That would be a cheap way to make a gas guzzler partially electric.

 

I do 1.6 miles to train station 3 days a week, sometimes 4 or 5 days a week. Always keep heat at 65 during winter , and fan at lowest setting. I manage to avg 50.2 this winter but i drive on slow side. And im not riding a freaking bike.

For my 1.6 mile trip i rarely lose any millage, for example im at 51.4 mpg , after the trip i will be at 51.4 or 51.3 worst case. But, i do drive slow..

I have 13,300 miles on prius 17 months since i purchased it.

 

Wow, I feel privileged now that my commute is 40 miles each way, and I get over 50 mpg during the week. Of course I telework two days a week, so the commute is only 10 feet on those days. I usually walk that.

 

For comparison's sake, an interesting tidbit: the other day I drove with my mom to the grocery store about a mile away with a ScanGauge, similar to OP's commute. It's a Dodge Neon, relatively cold out. 14.8 mpg. On the way back with the engine warm, more downhill, and me enticing her to coast more with high mpg numbers on Scangauge, 20 mpg. Prius still has superior mileage by a long shot over short distances, so while frustrating compared to others' mileage, 30 mpg is excellent for such a distance.

 

get a golf cart or moped if you won't or can't walk or bike.
