Clearly you don't understand it. Like my post indicated, it may be because the drive can only read DVD-R, not DVD+R. there are differences in the media that can make them incompatible with some drives.

If the drive can only read DVD-R and not DVD+R, then it doesn't care if you have the best DVD+R media money can buy... it still won't work. The formats of the media may just be incompattible.

i understand this and that's exactly the question i was asking. can the drive on prius read dvd+r and/or dvd-r? and i'm seeking a more definitive answer, not a perhaps. i can have all the hyposes that i want, but what's the conclusion?

To give you a "conclusion" would require quite a bit of work and some money... you'd have to test different brands of media, different methods of copying the disc, and the two different types of disc. Or alternatively you can pull apart the GPS system and try to figure out who made the drive for toyota and what the model number is, etc. I don't know about you, but i have better things to do with my life. get me results from one fo the two proposed experiments here, and i'll tell you exactly the capabilities of the drive (what can i say... designing computer parts for a living does have it's advantages...). Otherwise, you'll have to settle for conjecture.

also, that wasn't the question you asked, you asked why it couldn't read your disks even though they are the best out there. i gave you one, among many, possible reasons. here are a few other possible reasons, using the data you provided:

There was an error when burning the disc.
    You didn't finalize the disc.
you put the disc in upside down.
you have a bad batch of DVD+R's.

hopefully you can see that there are just too many variables to give you the "conclusion" you so desperately want without spending inordinate amounts of time and energy.

the initial question i asked was "what's the verdict on the question whether the new prius dvd drive is able to read the recordable disks".

and in your initial reply, you implied +R format is more widely used and has a better compatibility. this is what leads me to say that the disks i used is widely regarded as the best available +R DL disks.

i know all the conjectures and hypotheses. and i can certainly do all the experiements myself, given the time and availability of all kinds of disks. i just want to see whether there's a consensus on the forum regarding the ability of the drive, since it seems this topic has been discussed for quite a bit.

unfortunately i don't have a windows machine with dvd burners. but k3b never gave me any problems before. and both of my nec burners have been flashed with bit-setting firmwares, although this shouldn't be a problem for DL disks.

Sounds like noone has tried to burn to DL -R yet?.. that would quench alot of discussion if we could rule that out.. I'll have to see if I have any of those.

Yes, I'm using Liggy and Dee 1.Y6 on my ND-3550A. And I checked the DVD+R DL I burned, the book type is set to DVD-ROM. And I did first create an iso image and then burned from that images. It also shows the disc is complete with 1 session and 1 track.

Does that mean it is available for purchase at Toyota dealers' parts departments?

Media: I've used Ridata +R DL and Verbatim +R DL without a problem

Burner: (This is from my system profiler) Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K05
    Firmware Revision 1.03

Software: The Mac OS X Disk Utility Software-- no special settings-- just created an image of the disk and then burned the copy.
