Tomorrow's the big day. I'll create this today and try to keep it updated as we travel. This trip will be something like 5,400 miles or so. I'm afraid that I'm looking forward to it more than my wife is, but I know she'll enjoy seeing our friends along the way and some great scenery. The grass is mowed and now it's time to get the car emptied out and ready to receive the luggage. Also want to get the love bugs cleaned off before they eat into the paint so we can harvest a new coating of them tomorrow. I can't WAIT to get away from those blasted things. Also need to check the oil & the tire pressures. Probably ought to pack, too. (y)

Starting odometer will be 25,319 miles.

Skip that part, it will add extra weight to the car and reduce your mileage ;)
Will you be able to plug in to recharge your 25+ EV miles? That will improve your overall MPG for those 5,400 miles.

Have fun and drive safe! Post pics of the trip if you can.

Would like to hear how the Prime handles all of your luggage and stuff, and if the Prime is a comfy highway cruiser.

Safe travels. My Prius will be embarking upon a 1200 mile journey itself beginning tomorrow.

I hope so. I'll take the L1 EVSE with that in mind.

From here (Tampa) to the Houston area. Then to the Tucson area. Then to the Denver area. Then to north of Cheyenne. Then to the Nebraska panhandle. Then probably to Sioux City. Then to the Jackson, Mississippi area. Then back home.

    Absolutely!! :)

Well, there's already a donut spare in the back, so it will be a little more crowded than the typical Prius. I'll find out in the morning.

Thanks. Safe journeys and following seas (as in tail winds :D) to you, too.

bring a notebook for the copilot... to document all your prime experiments;) with 60 - 80 hours of drive time you could be the stephen hawking of the mysterious inner universe of prime charging/mpg cycles !! i'm almost a little jealous. it will be alot of fun to get to play with speeds / modes for hours. all i ever get is a 25 min commute:(

That's all I normally get, too.

As for the co-pilot, she is singularly disinterested in Prime research. I wish she would take notes. But, now that you've made the suggestion, I might just try it. Maybe I start a note on my phone and ask her to type in some stuff as we go. She spends quite a bit of time using hers for reading, research, etc. Maybe she'll enjoy that stuff on my phone even if it still has bezels.

My guess is you are going to see a lot of the ugly MPGs on those wide open roads. I suspect there will be a lot of 70 and 75 postings.

Jerry, this is severe weather (tornado, big hail) season in the central US, so on your way back, be sure to check the weather each morning before crossing the Nebraska/Iowa area. Have a great trip.

PS, it was 20 years ago today the the strongest tornado ever recorded (F5) nearly wiped Moore, OK off the map.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm from the midwest. Grew up in NW Iowa, so I'm quite familiar with the "interesting weather" that happens this time of year. I'll never forget that tornado outbreak of April 1974. Over 900 tornadoes in one night. My wife-to-be and I helped clean up debris at a trailer park in Frankfort, KY. Unbelievable!!!

Anyway, day one is behind us. 539.6 miles and 54.8 mpg with a fully loaded car. Mostly 70-74 mph. There was one stretch of several miles where it was raining so hard we were only getting about 30-35 mpg -- going downhill!! Other than that, it was over 90 almost all day, but otherwise pleasant.

On a side note, the speedometer is only about 0 to 1 mph higher than the gps at 70 mph. Did not expect that since the PiP was 2-3 higher.

    It is almost clear full!

When moving across the country in my previous car (honda civic hybrid) I was able to get its normally 40-45mpg down to 15mpg by driving it 80mph across South Dakota with it fully packed plus a softpack carrier on top. It was a windy day and I was driving into the wind.

MPG yesterday, calculated from the pump was 52.77. only 2 mpg less than the car's estimate. Today's forecast looks like rain almost all the way to Houston. That won't help be break any efficiency records!!

BTW, @Mark57, I was a little shocked at how many miles of shredded trees there still are along I-10 in the FL panhandle from last year's hurricane. Lots of mangled roadsigns strewn about, too.

Absolutely. My sis-in-law is in Ft Lauderdale. Lots of leftovers still around to see. If you fly into OKC and land from the South, you can still see the damage trail of the 1999 F5 by the mile wide 18 mile long trail of new asphalt roofs. Being from Iowa, you definitely know what's going on. We've already had 30 tornadoes since "last week". It's an active season this year.

Have a great time, and it sounds like you are. Enjoy!

What pressure did you set in your tires pre-trip and are you happy with what you set?
