Seems to me at those prices going solar would definitely be worth it financially.

My last monthly bill from PG&E (which includes gas as well) was a little over $22. That's with charging the car and running the air conditioning. I generate more power than I use normally, so might actually have PG&E owe me money at the end of the year. Solar is such a great investment!

I would love to! But I don't know that I could bring myself to cut down the huge, old, beautiful tree that heavily shades practically my entire house.

I'm with you!! Keep the tree. If you've got the room, the solution might be solar panels on another structure (garage?), or stand alone array of panels in a discreet location. . If you lived in Washington DC, you would definitely benefit from a wind turbine setup, with all the HUGE amounts of hot air being generated there!!

I agree, but that last hot spell put a dent into my surplus to utility.

Yup, 6 cents per kWh covers it all. Of course my total electric bill only runs $40-45 anyway, I do expect now it will be closer to $60 a month...

At least something is cheap in NY, we sure get taxed to death here!

    Wow, a full charge for you would be 6.3 * .06 = $0.378. (y)

The last time I looked, the rates for electricity in Mass (from the supplier I have) is like $0.24/kWh delivered. I have solar which I prepaid for $0.083/kWh projected. I have over produced the target the last 2 years so I have a credit which has lowered my costs even more. (my prepaid lease gives me full credit for over production but they have to pay me for under production in any 2 year window). I still have to pay crazy amounts for the little bit of power I pull during the dark parts of the day, but my credit is at the same rate as they charge me so on balance I only pay the crazy delivery charge. If not for the over production of my solar panels, I would be hard pressed to justify an EV vehicle in this area right now.

This month's SCE bill was similar to last month's... seems to be pretty steady (bit higher than before the Prime, but still in the lower tier -- and remained steady, costing about $1.15 per charge (from EV empty) at my rate tier.

As I always say, I'm multi-lingual: I'm illiterate in several different languages...

I live in Upstate New York and my charge per kilowatt hour is .09 cents. I tried it once a day during the weekday and maybe a couple times during the weekend depending on what I'm doing that day. But I calculated maybe 13 to $15 a month. Which is not bad.

Well, dang. Just as my car arrives, we get a kW price increase. Used to be $0.0637 and it goes up to 0.0715. That increases the cost to fully charge from 40 cents to 45 cents. +12%!!!

Not just yet (a few more years), but appreciate the suggestion. The way we fixed the increase was to screw new LED bulbs into every socket we could find, and give away all the CFL bulbs that were there previously.

Wallymart has 60w replacement LED's for $2.97/4 pack. Also, unrelated, but related, 5qt. 0W20 Mobil1 is only $22.xx right now. I picked up 2 of those as my wife's new car (TODAY!), the CT200h, also uses the same oil.

That percentage is huge; the actual rate is tiny!! What a numbers game!

Yeah but in 103,000 miles with my 2012 PIP, I never had to add a teaspoon of oil, let alone, a quart. Now my Hondas and Acuras, that's another story entirely!!

My So Cal Edidion bill structure: Tier 1 (0-100% allocation ) - $0.16 KWh, Tier 2 (101%-399% allocation) - $0.25 KWh, Tier 3 (400% up allocation) - $0.31 per KWh. My tier 1 per 6.3 KWh charge is $1.01. Tier 2 per 6.3 KWh charge is $1.58. Teir2 charge will cost more than gasoline ($2.56 gal) so I stop home charging my Prime at the last few days of the each cycle,

Ouch! At those prices, it must hurt. While personal solar cost big cash, I can see why many people go that route - to stick it to the utilities by generating their own. The payback is never, but I can see the ouch going away with each joyful electron moving from the cells to use at one's own residence.

I seem to have "missed" seeing your question until just now... sorry for the lapse. Anywhooo... we don't have our Prime yet, but I'll have a good idea of the difference in our monthly kWh consumption before-and-after having the car, because I've kept track of that for a LONG time already. Over the last twelve months, we've consumed an average of just under 700 kWh. (As an aside, we have gotten cost estimates from five solar installation companies... we're hoping our eventual rooftop array - which, depending on GAI's workload, we MIGHT be getting in October - will produce at least 90% of our total / yearly kWh consumption INCLUDING the added kWh to charge the car.)

have you considered switching to TOU, time of use? I switched to that and charge over night @ $0.16 ... I spent almost a 1/2hr on the phone w/SCE with a very helpful lady who looked at all the various options and price comparison/projection
