A couple of months ago, I rented a base Sentra that wasn't anything to write home about but the mileage was fairly impressive. I was late and drove it pretty hard in a cold rain on the outbound leg and observed the 70-75 mph speed limits on the way back; approximately 350 miles and computer average said 37.5mpg. I felt I could have kissed the 40mpg barrier under better circumstances.

A couple months after that trip when it was much warmer, I rented a similar 2014 Corolla S and netted about the same highway mpg's (36.x) in the 70-80mph range. Did not do any city/urban driving in either. The corolla was a better driver than the sentra.

My week with the 2014 Corolla got my 6.6L/100km (35.6mpg) in mixed driving (which included mountain highway driving as well as city). Take away the mountain driving and replace it with flat highway driving and bias it towards more city driving, the 2nd tank was 7.2L/100km (32.7mpg).

The Corolla does 50mpg at 50mph (4.7L/100km at 80km/h). 60mpg at 42mph (3.9L/100km at 60km/h) with cruise control on flat land. (It was fluctuating between 3.2 and 4.4L/100km on the instant FE gauge).

My Wife has the Blue 2014 Corolla S Premium like the one in the commercial with the kids dancing around. The only thing I find odd is the way they "simulate" the CVT shifting. Call it what you will...but the new Corolla is well built, comfortable, handles good and even looks good.

It's been a great new build. To get a real-life experience, you have to notice how you don't drive on eggshells like you do a Prius. I used to drive my 2004 Corolla S like whatever, and still averaged 38. It's taken them until now to get back there, with some failures along the way. My car, I drove 75 most always on the highway. The Prius I feel guilty going 70. Around town the Prius wins. But in the real world, the Corolla is a great ride.

Our 2005 Corolla S got about 28 for me no matter what on the 18 mile festival of stop lights and traffic that is my commute to work. We would usually get about 34 on the road. Had my 2012 Prius a month and getting 50-51 calculated mpg on the work drive without LRR tires and I try to keep up with the traffic flow instead of going for mpg only...it's pretty much the right conditions for a Prius. The Corolla does a respectable job though and is a fine car, and if the new one gets 40 on the highway there isn't as much difference in that setting anymore. Although we haven't seen the 2016 Prius highway mpg yet, which would be a better comparison. Haven't had the Prius on the highway much except for on the way home from the dealer...it got 47.5 mpg displayed but 75-80 mph the whole time. Not too bad if you ask me.

Can't imagine getting that low out of the Corolla, was that the year they changed styles to the weird body?

There was a week when my mileage went below 30, found out the caliper was frozen. Mine was a manual, and my lowest around town whatever mileage was 32, I don't believe I even got lower. Usually at 40 on long highway trips, and I did cruise in that car, not 65 mph for sure;) All hand calcs too, no trip computers in that baby.

The second best car I've had was the 2011 Camry SE. Such a competent cruiser, but my long-term average in that was 28.

I set the temp in my Prius in 2012 and it has remained steady. Any idea why yours needs any adjustment?

My drive is the reason...I had a slightly different route where I would get 30 but it would take longer. Avg speed when I fill up is right around 20 mph. At one point my wife was getting 24 mpg out of it but it was almost all short trips. there's a stretch on my commute where it is speed limit 55 so we all go at least 60 with stop lights. That is an mpg killer. At least I get a lot of regen on the Prius when I have to stop from that speed. I thought the 2004 and 2005 were the same but I could be wrong. It did better than my maxima...at one point I got 19 on it in the city. I actually ran out of gas that tank because the range was so short. At least I coasted into a pump haha.

What weird body? tall and narrow? 2003 MY.

    2005 saw the midlife update.
    • new chrome grill surround
    • rear indicator lens went from yellow to clear
    • new front bumper
    • new CE wheel cover
    • New XRS trim level with 2ZZ-FE 1.8 litre Yahama-tuned engine
    • Tweaked body kit for S models
    • LE switched from electroluminescent backlit gauges to Optitron electroluminescent gauges.
    • TPMS added
    • LE adds chrome vent knobs and interior door handles
    • Power door locks gain shifter-activated automatic door lock/unlock function.
and in Canada, an engine immobiliser was standard equipment.

The issue is specific to the PiP and not wanting the ICE to turn on. Say it's a cold winter day. I am pulling into my driveway with the temperature at a comfortable 78. I have to jab the temperature down to LO before I shutoff. Otherwise, tomorrow morning after the car is fully charged The ICE will turn on because the heater is powered by the ICE. Ditto if I want to use the defroster. The floor and windshield setting works just fine but if temp is above LO, ICE turns on.
