Two month anniversary stats for my 2012 plug-in basic.

I have an 11.2 mile commute to a train station, where I can usually plug in for an EV return trip home. At home I keep the car plugged in. Most of my trips are in EV mode. The HV miles are mostly from very long trips to NYC and nearby counties for work or to visit family.

    Total miles: 2203

EV miles: 1149 or 52% - 277 kwh total used x 1.15 (to account for conversion loss) = approximately 318.55 khw drawn from the grid. 318.55 x $0.19 per kwh (according to my LIPA bill) = $60.52 or 5.26 cents per mile. I subtract 20% to account for the "free"charges at the parking garage, and I have paid, out of pocket, $48.42 to travel 1,149 EV miles.

HV miles: 1054 or 48%. The car reports I used 18 gallons which is 58.5 MPG in HV mode. At $4.00 average price for gas, I paid $72.00 to travel 1054 miles or 6.8 cents per mile.

Savings: To drive those same 2,203 miles in my SUV or the older Saturn that I traded in to get the PIP would have cost $383.12 (95.78 gallons) using an average 23 MPG and $4.00 average price for gas. The total savings was $262.71, (and 77.78 gallons not burned by me). I drove a little more over the last two months than usual, but assuming that rate of driving continues, my projected savings for the year will be $1,576.26 (or 466.68 gallons not burned by me).

Would that be 80.24 MPGe combined ?

    318.55 kWh equates to 9.45 gallons, 2203 miles / (18 gallons + 9.45 gallon equivalent ) = 80.24 MPGe

    Yup, 80.24 MPGe.

    2,203 miles / 18 gallons = 122.4 MPG if we ignore the electricity -- Volt style :p

PiP keeps track and display kWh in the car. Volt doesn't, just the big MPG with electric miles included.

But let's not turn this into another Volt vs PiP pissing contest.

Of course not, this is a PiP thread. I said kWh displayed on-board (in the car).

So why did you bring the Volt into it?

For calculating "big MPG", made infamous by the Volt. PiP owners don't ignore the electricity or gas consumption. We are proud to be efficient with either fuels.

If find the MPGe to be misleading. A gallon “equivalent” of 34.02 khw costs me (at 19 cents/khw) $6.46. I pay $4.00 on average for a gallon of gas in NY. But I am paying 5.26 cents per mile on electricity so that 34.02kwh gets me 122.8 miles. That is my "MPG equivalent."

I would rather see a car sticker that had a “cost per mile” chart based on the price of electricity. That allows for comparison between vehicles in terms that are simple and clear (to me at least). When I realized I was paying about 16 to 18 cents per mile to drive my SUV, the decision to buy the PiP was easy.

I can agree that MPGe is just an aspect. You are getting ~ 122MPGe in EV mode.

I am paying 1.4 cents per mile, combined gas and electric.

Thanks. I wish I could calculate that too, but I can't find any data on how LIPA/National Grid generate the electricity used on Long Island.

So that you can compare, 23 MPG SUV would emit about 500 g/mi.
