So, here's what I've got re VIN and packages:

    BC: 20
    BG: 22
    AM: 20
    BI: 20
    AI: 20
    AG: 22

By process of elimination, I'm at least 99% confident that the "20" indicates side airbags while the "22" indicates no side airbags. Again, this is consistent with the Classic VINs where "12" indicated side airbags and "18" indicated no side airbags.

I haven't seen a VIN for the RW package but I'll bet it has a "22" VIN.

As far as I know '20' means the Front/Side airbags. That's matched every one I've checked, including the lowest available package with F/S-AB

I just looked at one of the local dealers who keeps posting Prii that aren't available, hehe.

These are the ones they list in stock

    Pkg 1 (RW) - Rear Wiper Only - JTDKB22U440062201

    Pkg2 (GY) - Front/Side Airbags - JTDKB20U440065912

    Pkg7 (AM) - Front/Side Airbags - JTDKB20U840062897

    Pkg9 (BC) - Front/Side Airbags - JTDKB20U540062498

If anyone here has one without airbags, I'm betting youre a '22' :)

Well, that pretty much completes my matrix. "22" = w/o side airbags.

No the ultimate, which I just ordered, is "<heart>JTDKB2".

(for those in other states, CA has a "kids plate" that allows one of the characters to be a symbol, like heart, star, hand, and one other I can't remember)

What can I say, that's geeky even for me...

2004 Prius with side air bags start with JTDKB20U

Position #9 is the check digit.

    Position #10 is the model year. (4 for a 2004 )

Position #11 is the assembly plant ( all Prius it should be 0)

Position #12-17 is the individual car's serial number

Interestingly, my 11th digit is "3". I just got my car on Sunday, so perhaps this reflects the new plant/line Toyota claimed they were adding to boost production...

Yes, very interesting and good news to those who are still waiting and want production to get going (without sacrificing quality, of course).

Any additional information from your dealer or the stickers on the inside edge of the driver's door? Anyone know why they skipped 1 and 2 (maybe not making the Prius there)?

This was posted on yahoo groups, Prius-2G and dates back to when Prius was made at only one plant.. I know that now there are at least two plants making Prii... assume that is why you are seeing the 3
